My beloved fellow swticharinos!

Well I am now 4 months out and happy to report that I have lost 137

lbs. That's right! From 415 to 278 as of yesterday. I am now able

to eat ANYTHING and not have a bad experience. Even a glass of wine

has gone down without a problem (and I'm now quite the cheap date!).

I find that I end up splitting everything I order out with someone

and still full stuffed and satisfied. I have absolutely no

complications in the tummy area. My energy levels are coming back up

and I feel better than I have in years. I'm 32 and actually feel 21

when the feet aren't hurting. Yes, alas, the peripheral neuropathy

seems to be settling in to be a long-term thing. Something happened

during the surgery and no one can tell me what. I was under for

almost 8 hours. I am alleging that the anestheologist failed to

reposition my body resulting in compression injuries. Anyone who had

NYU surgery knows how bad those surgical tables are. They had to

strap me on to keep me from rolling off!!

But even with long term pain management looming ahead, I am glad I

had the operation. As always, any questions will be answered and

would love to exchange ideas. Anyone else in Dallas????

Reece: Did you have diabetes before you had the surgery?

I did...and after the surgery, I have a patch in the middle of my back as

big as both hands that is numb. I had burning, " washing " pains down my right

leg and on both feet. The pain in my legs has gone, but i still have a

constant " tingling " sensation in my feet. My right foot gets cold VERY

easy...feels cold, anyhow, to me, but not to the touch.

I was convinced that I had an injury during surgery, too. I had MRIs and Cat

scans and x-rays, went to see two neurologists, who stuck needles in my leg

in two spots and ran electricity down the nerve to see how well they were

working (who THINKS of these things?), and the final verdict is:

Diabetes reacts, sometimes, to a trauma with results like I have, My body

apparently saw the surgery as a trauma, and the diabetes, as it was getting

fixed, left me with THIS little gift.

Well....it could be worse. I stagger a bit when I walk, am uncertain on my

feet, since I can't feel them that well, and I need to watch for infections

and things for the same reason, but, overall, I'll take it, compared with

what I used to have.

By the way...congratulations on an incredible weight loss. That's GREAT

progress.

I have been told over the phone that I am approved....however, we have to

wait for the " official " letter to start the process of pre-op testing. A

couple of questions, please....were you on the table so long because your

surgery was lap? I have a BMI of 67 to 68 and from what I understand, the

insurance did not find lap or lap assisted " medically necessary " so mine

will have to be open. What was your starting BMI? I am " healthy as a

horse " at 43...my problem is that I am also almost a " big as a horse " (LOL).

But everything that I have read indicates the greatly increased chances of

complications with a BMI over 65.

Congrats on the weight loss!! When my turn gets here...hope I do as well!!

Reece,

Wow! Congratulations! I'm hoping that I'll achieve results like that soon.

I'm going for my initial consult with Dr. Ren on Jan 7th and hoping to have

the surgery as soon as possible after that. Were you able to have the

surgery laproscopically? Any advise you can give a prospective patient

relative to the doctor or hospital? I too will be coming from out-of-town,

New Hampshire.
