He signs some . I worry about him and wonder if he will ever talk in conversation. He has always been aprrox 2yrs behind his peers, but hes awesome and a great kid. Guest guest
Hi Sherly, You must be going through alot, It is so stressful since speech is such an important part of life. Get him a good therapist that knows about apraxia. Does he have oral motor problems too? imitating tongue movements? puckering for a kiss? Lindsey cannot blow her nose. this is related to apraxia too. anything with motor planning is hard for her. She has a ton of words, but she can only have a very limited conversation with other children because they have a hard time understanding her. with adults she can talk and talk if she's comfortable, but again you have to struggle to understand alot, and its sounds different. she also puts her words in the wrong order like a younger child. We focused so much on her just talking we didn't stress enough the proper way! There are so many sounds which she has an extremely hard time getting out. she will grope.grimace and its sad to watch, even though she's smiling and always try's so hard! it is hard work. She too has always been a few years behind her age level. developmentally and speech wise '9' has been her magic year. A light bulb has been turned on!She's really doing well right now.hopefully she will catch up to her peers one day. Jennie In a message dated 9/11/2005 8:54:40 P.M. Guest guest
hey, yes Dakoda has always had problems with oral motor skills, he can now stick out his tongue but is very hard for him to do , still will not pucker for kiss , but can suck on a straw. He tries so hard to talk and he gets so frustrated when we can't understand and ask him to sign. Now he just usually throws tantrums and doesn't sign.I'm always glad to hear of stories where they do catch up , alot of his dad's family chooses to blv he won't and doesnt bother to much with him, which is their loss. I wish they would take time to read some posts, but they refuse any offers. Thank you for responding. I have struggled to get him the help he needs, and since she does think apraxia she has increased his speech to 5x a week.I still think i'm fortunate compared to some on listserve , it breaks my heart to follow these posts at times, he was diagnosed late so feeding tubes hasn't been an issue and still fighting for ght. When i was at the convention, I've never been so at peace, all the kids were so beautiful and full of life, you wld never know they have been through h??? and back. Dakoda wasn't breathing at birth and thank God he gave him back, and what I go through is only minor to what these babies have to endure. Thanks for listening.
