Guest guest
Dear Ford, I really appreciated what your wife Sidney had to say. Fat people and people with mental illnesses are among the last in our society that it's OK to be prejudiced against, make fun of, and discriminate against. We've all experienced it. It's there and IT'S what's ugly, not fat people. For example, I had to self-pay because my insurance company will not cover ANY treatment for obesity. They'd rather pay for my quadruple bypass. Among most of the medical profession, being overweight is still a matter of " will-power " and " character. " It's OK not to give us adequate medical care. Check your insurance policies, and I guarantee that most of them cover mental illnesses at a much lower $ level than physical illnesses. It's still OK to be prejudiced against people with depression, manic-depression, etc. I had a student who was obviously manic-depressive, but his insurance would only pay for 5 days inpatient treatment. He ended up killing himself. Well, that's enough soap-box for today. Blessings, Robyn
Guest guest
Robyn, I totally agree with you. I do feel that the corporate sponsored prejudice is the worst aspect of being obese. It is socially acceptable and our government allows it (for now). I think it is unconscionable for any insurance policy to discriminate against treatment for obesity or any other medical condition including brain disorders. I have a son with a developmental disability as well as schizophrenia and I am acutely aware that he is considered less worthy of quality care as a result of this prejudice. It really makes me feel that the insurers would rather have us die as a result of our obesity related health issues as a punishment for not complying with the currently acceptable social norm as it relates to physical attractiveness. It doesn't feel good when you know you're perceived as less than human. (Boy did it feel good to vent.) Enough of my soap box for now. ann Shallow Hall letter Dear Ford, I really appreciated what your wife Sidney had to say.
