Get a can of pears with the syrup. Drain the syrup into a cup and give

him an ounce an hour. My grandmother always swore by that and it does help

stop the vomiting. Plus it has sugar in it.

If you can't check for keytones or his sugar then I would call your doc now.

Good luck hope he feels better soon. Give him a big hug from me.

You need to check Ian's ketones and keep an eye on the levels all

day long. If at any point they are small to moderate, then you need

to take him to the ER and demand that he receive and IV with D10 for

rehydration and stabilization. He will need to be admitted, too.

They will try to tell you that they can rehydrate him and send him

home after a few hours, but for our RSS kids, this does not work.

He is going to need at least 24 hours of complete gut rest. That

means IV only. After that time, you can introduce clear liquids and

jello. If he tolerates those for a few hours, you can slowly

advance to soft foods and up. But do not rush things. Each time

there is a setback, you have to start from square one. For Max and

Salem, this usually means a 4-5 day hospital stay. But their

blood sugars and ketones are more difficult to stabilize. For some

kids it's only 2 or 3 days.

I know there is a letter from Dr. H. somewhere that explains the

protocol. Is it on the MAGIC website? Or is it in the files

section here?

Email me if you need more guidance. And get those ketosticks and

keep checking. By the way, the waiting for an hour is not good for

our kids. You should give him just a sip at a time of Gatorade or

something like it and see if that helps. You can also try glucose

gel in his cheek. Sometimes these cause more vomiting and retching,

but you have to try.

Jodi - thank you - I thought so - just needed the reassurance. By

the way - Ian is still vomiting. I've spoken to the nurse at the

pediatrician office and demanded a phyisican call me and that they

forwarn the hospital we are coming. Ian is pretty lethargic so,

I've decided not to wait. Once I get the call from the

pediatrician - I'm going to demand he call ahead to get us in (the

nurse said a 4 hour wait in the ER) because I told the nurse a 4

hour wait was unacceptable.

Just got off the phone with the pediatrician and she insists she see

him first before we admit him. Touch base with you later. Thanks

again.
