Guest guest
Casts really shouldn't slip if they are applied correctly, although I am sure it has happened before. Are the all the way up to his thigh (over the knee)? They foot should be pointing down, but I would think by the 5th cast, they should be starting to move them up. However, my son only had 5 casts, so this could by why I think that. You want the foot to point down at some point because this is the proper way to slowly align the bones in the correct manner. You can just put them where they look like they should go. Eventually the foot should be in a neutral position, but out 70 degrees with the last cast. Maybe someone who had a few more casts could shed some more light on this. 11/19/04 bcf Donna Casady wrote: Has this happened to anyone else? I awoke this morning around 3:15 to my baby's cries. I looked down to find a cast on the floor. The entire cast had just slipped off his left leg! There'd been no hint of this coming earlier. Of course, it must have slipped a little bit, but wasn't noticable to me before going to sleep. I made an unscheduled trip about 4 hours away with 5 children ages 6 and under to get him casted again. They did it immediately with no problem, knowing that I'd just made a long trip. Has anyone else had a cast just fall off? Also, his feet are pointing down, like a ballerina on her toes. Is this right? This is (as of now) his 5th casting, He had severe bilateral CF at birth 5 weeks ago today. I think they are turning good, but the pointing down surprises me. The cast today and the one we had done on Tuesday was done by one of the other doctors, not ours. Donna
Guest guest
Donna, So you are another crazy mommy that drags many many young children all over the world? Lots of fun it is too. I think. I don't remember how many casts Tenny lost in the early part of his treatment. That was before we discovered Ponseti and got into see a good doc. A slipped cast and a cast that falls off is usually a sign that the cast was applied incorrectly. The fact that the cast was done by another doctor could mean it was not done correctly?? Has the new cast slipped at all? A slipped cast does more harm than good. An incorrectly applied cast also isn't going to achieve correction. Could you call your doctor and see what he thinks about the slipped cast? The feet pointing down is probably because of the tight heel cord. The feet are brought around to the point of correction, then the tenotomy is performed to pull the foot up. The Achilles tendon is a very strong tendon that has to be cut in 80% of club feet to allow the foot have dorsiflexion. Hope the resident experts here give you more advice. I need to run control the rampaging mob of little bodies at this house. At least stop a few tears and get some into bed. Keep an eye on that new cast. Good luck. Mom to Tenny rt. cf. FAB 14/7. I don't know if I want to claim to be responsible for Tenny or any of his siblings tonight. CF & SB questions Has this happened to anyone else? I awoke this morning around 3:15 to my baby's cries.
