Guest guest
My son was 3 months when we first asked our pediatrician about his flat head. He said to wait until 6 months as he said he would grow out of it. He never did and at 6 months we were referred to STAR Band for a consult. He ended up being diagnosed not just with brachy but also plagio on both sides in the moderate-severe category according to his measurements. We decided to pursue CST as an alternative therapy after lots of sleepless nights trying to decide what was best for him as sometimes the adjustment can be initially traumatic for babies (poor sleep, uncomfortable, sweating, etc...). We did 3 months of CST 2X/wk for 2 months and then 1Xwk for 1 month and although he isn't perfect we have noticed a dramatic difference. He head is much more rounded and his plagio is almost non-existent. At his 9 month his pediatrician could not believe the difference. If we had to do the helmet we would have and was even approved for it with AETNA. We never got him re-measured but are comfortable with the results to live with them. I am in no way saying to not pursue helmet therapy. As a parent you have to make up your own mind and trust your instincts. Try to avoid letting it go past 9 months without any sort of intervention. I found my CST therapist through the Upledger Institute. If anyone wants to find a therapist here is a link to their website. Guest guest
I'm glad you had success and would love to see your photos. My daughter also had brachy and wore a starband. I wanted to mention for any new readers that CST is considered and alternative treatment (as you mentioned), and not backed up with scientific studies that it is effective for plagio/brachy. I have heard success stories, but personally would not choose it unless it was in conjunction with banding. -christine sydney, 4.5 yrs, starband grad > > My son was 3 months when we first asked our pediatrician about his flat head. Guest guest
That is awesome! Glad you had such good results. My son is in a helmet, but he also has torticollis, so the helmet therapy is usually better in those cases so that the tort doesn't continue to interfere with the head shaping results. > > My son was 3 months when we first asked our pediatrician about his flat head.
