Guest guest
I really wish that I had asked my cranial doctor for more details because she claimed that there were studies that proved that it helped. Unfortunately, I don't even know what field these studies were done in. Because she is a medical doctor and medical doctors are typically skeptical of alternative treatments, I just trusted her. Nowdays, I probably would have asked her for more information. But, at that time, I was a more trusting person than I am now. To be honest, I would not even know where to start a search since CST doesn't really belong to any one field the way that chiro does. I did research chiro for several weeks and I read several article abstracts that did document changes for plagio and tort. Some were case studies and some were group studies. Other common issues in the literature for infants were ear infections and reflux/colic. Because I didn't buy the articles but only read the abstracts, I couldn't judge the rigor of the studies, but I found enough of them to believe that it was not a wild goose chase. And, because my daughter also had reflux, it was a good decision for us. I would recommend that people try and look into the research themselves before making a decision. For us, it was a good one, but it seems that they really only help when the method addresses one of the causes of the flat head or tort. A good professional will know if it will help when they do the exam. Both of the people we saw said that they could possibly help, but could not commit to it helping until after they examined my daughter and confirmed that there were problems that they could help with. From what I know there are no good studies to prove that CST is effective for treating plagio. I have heard success stories, for the most part in conjunction with banding, but some without. If the plagio is mild and you can take time to "wait and see" if it works, then CST may be fine to try (but take pictures as others have suggested). However if plagio is more severe I would recommend banding. Banding does have studies to show it is effective and is the more accepted treatment for plagio. The idea of putting a band/helmet on your baby may be overwhelming at first, but babies adjust quickly, and are still adorable. Also it is possible to start seeing improvement in a week or two, which helps reassure us that we are doing the right thing.-christinesydney, 4.5 yrs, starband grad>> My LO (6 months) just got diagnosed with plagiocephaly. Guest guest
My husband said he found a study that showed small changes in facial angles of adults after osteopath work. Unfortunately, he doesn't remember where he found it. He said it was on a NCR site. My husband's conclusion is that if you can get changes in adults, you can likely get even more changes in children. Actually, I am pretty sure I've seen small changes in my older son right after a couple osteopath treatments. They were after episodes where I was down because I thought he was looking worse. Both times, the osteopath claimed my son had received a head injury. The latest he said my son had been banging his head, and it was true that he had received a handful of big head bangs on the playground, and we had not told the osteopath about this. I cannot say my son's head looks better than last fall, but I do think I see subtle changes from worse to better again. For sure, my son's head is less sensitive to touch and I think it feels better. For our toddler, I'm confident that we have seen subtle changes after alternative treatments. It must depend upon what is wrong with the head and age on whether alternative treatments help and how much. -Kathy wrote:  I really wish that I had asked my cranial doctor for more details because she claimed that there were studies that proved that it helped.
