So if you are eating grains, whole wheat etc you are probably OK (though you might get the runs from that). Sugar and white bread/pasta are the real culprits in keeping you from loosing weight. Interestingly I saw an add on TV for a special low-carb pasta made with soy. I have no idea what it is like or if it is available in stores, but it might be worth a try for pasta lovers. Alternatively, whole wheat pasta is a better choice than white pasta. Don't fret about small amounts of sugar. But do worry if you are drinking a 6-pack of Coke a day or a large bag of potato chips.
