Guest guest
Dawna, You might not know if Noah has silent reflux, and the only way you truly know if he has delayed emptying is either by a gastric emptying test or if you child has a g-tube, and you can vent the contents of his/her stomach for something they ate hours earlier. ALl 3 of my kids have reflux, but they have all been in different ways. My oldest is almost 12 with RSS. had reflux, delayed emptying, and could never tolerate large amounts (boluses) of food. He still has a g-tube, and has had one his whole life. My 5 year old son has silent reflux. When he was a baby, he would gag, gap, and gulp constantly when the food was coming up. He rarely actually vomited, but I could hear the food moving up & down & see the look of pain in his face. I thought he outgrew this after he was about a year old. When he started talking, his voice was a bit hoarse. I never though anything of it, but strangers used to stop me commenting about his voice. A speech therapist asked me if he had vocal nodules once, and that is when I made an appointment with an ENT. Sure enough he did have nodules, and the ENT thought it was due to reflux. I told him didn't have reflux anymore. We waited about another year, and went back to the ENT. He recommended that see a GI doctor (he had never seen one prior). The GI did an endoscopy and a pH probe on him, and his reflux was severe. We let it go for almost 3 years without continuing to treat it, because we didn't know he still had reflux. I also have a 19 month old daughter. She had the worst reflux of them all. She has been hospitalized a few times for this, and has also had a pH probe & gastric emptying scan (but no endoscopy). She had delayed emptying and severe reflux (384 times in 24 hours according to the probe). I believe that she has outgrown most of this, as she rarely ever vomits anymore. However, I worry that she also has silent reflux after what we went through with . If you are concerned that Noah may have reflux or delayed emptying, you should take him to a GI doctor. They will go through a list of questions with you to determine if further testing is necessary. Kim C.
