Guest guest
Kori~~ Thanks SO much for your well wishes and for thinking about me in my absence~ We have recovered altho' it was a long and painful process. A few of you might remember that I posted a little before the storm about a possible relapse. I sent pics and video to Dr. P and got a reply that he wasnt relapsing and to just follow up once we got to Hawaii. I think it was the following week that the storm hit. We evacuated despite my not wanting to do so. We'd just left about 6 wks prior before Dennis hit. My husband was deployed for 4 wks prior to the storm and drove home, against his commands orders, thru the night... 17 hours b/c traffic was contraflowed in New Orleans. He had to drive through northern Lousianna and Mississippi and almost hit a drunk guy that was thrown from his truck as Drew watched. The guy died right in front of him. He made it to Pascagoula at 1000 on Sunday and I picked him up, packed and had everyone out of the house in 2 hours. We went to our hometown 4 hours away. The trip took 7 hours due to traffic. I stayed up most of the night worrying about spin off tornados where we were and worrying about our home. Thankfully, we'd sold our house but all our household goods were in storage in Biloxi. To make a really long story short, our furnished condo flooded so we were homeless. Drew's car flooded on the base in Pascagoula and was totalled and 5 weeks later, we found out that we lost all our household goods to flooding. We used PODS (Portable On Demand Storage) and their warehouse was hit hard. As luck would have it, our POD was on the bottom floor when the warehouse flooded to 8 ft deep and stayed 6ft under for a week. In fact, feel free to check out my photos here at Yahoo to see the damage if you want. I think theyre all still public. The kids and I were put in the BOQ in Pensacola at their Naval Air Station, Drew had to go back to work. Since he lost his car, I was driving him back and forth about 250 miles across 2 states about 2-3 times a week for one month. I bought the truck on June 20 and when I put it on the carrier to ship over on OCT 31, it had 10,007 miles on it. In October, we left for Orlando to spend time w/ my Dad for 30 days and left for Hawaii in November. We got into military housing within 2 wks and started rebuilding. We came here w/ $5000 in savings and it was gone in 2 wks. We didnt have insurance as the guy that sold us the PODS contract told us that our things were covered as long as they were in the warehouse. Chalk it up as a lesson learned... NEVER take a salesman at his word and ALWAYS buy insurance. We had lawyers check out our contract and its airtight. We cant sue them. FEMA cant help us b/c our things were in storage. The Navy hasnt helped us b/c they didnt pack our things out. The light at the end of the tunnel tho' is this: We wrote our Congressman in FL and HI and they forwarded our letter to the Navy, deeming the Government responsible for us. We're now waiting to here just HOW responsible they intend to be. The kids are great. Our older girls (14 and 10) missed 3 months of school but have adjusted like you wouldnt believe. I gave them the first grading period to adjust. They just got report cards this week and both are on the Honor Roll. The boys, now 3 and 2, rock on daily like nothing ever happened. Sometimes Ethan, the older one, will ask about a certain toy and then tell me the Hurricane ate it. Occasionally, he'll make reference to the Hurricane eating our house but for the most part, its not something that he thinks about. Drew had knee surgery toward the end of January and is recovering well. I went into counseling and was diagnosed w/ Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and am on meds for depression, anxiety, nightmares and sleep disorder. I am SO much better now. I started online classes in February and I now have my own home business. I'll be returning to traditional classes this Fall to become an EMT and then Paramedic, which is what I did before becoming a SAHM. Drew is also on meds for Adult ADD that was diagnosed as a result of the extra stress on us. We're in marriage counseling and have almost divorced more than once over this. BUT~~~~~~ we're fighting for our family. Things are getting better daily. Its been hard but we're getting through it. Sorry to take up so much space here... but thats pretty much the standard, long version to answer the question of 'how we're doing'. Guest guest
Holy Cow Batman. Lori my heart goes out to you all!!! You poor thing! Oh I really pray your family finds strength and healing now. I cannot imagine the sense of loss you're dealing with - losing everything like you did - but please you both try to remember your marriage wasn't in that POD, just your things were and thank God your family is unhurt. I love the Hurricane Ate My Toy bit. Mean ol' Katrina!!! But she didn't eat you. She's done enough damage already, kwim? Try not to let her keep eating you up from Hawaii. You have my thoughts and prayers. s.
