LOL - that is me to a T. I also wanted to ask this question, but I guess was

too embarassed to admit it. I now weigh more than I ever have in my life -

have gained about 20- lbs since I started researching surgery about 6 mos

ago. I think it is because I have finally decided to give up the *diet*

mentality, and even when I wasn't dieting per se I was watching......and for

the last few months, I have just eaten what I wanted. I am glad to be

getting this surgery soon......and know I would have been better off *not*

gaining weight......and I know I will have big adjustments to make regarding

my eating patterns after surgery, thanks to all of the info I have learned

here. I thought I was the only one who gained before surgery!

Dear " worried " lol

My Dr insisted his patients LOSE weight before the

surgery. I thought that was the dumbest order I had ever heard, until I

found out the reason. His nurse said that by losing some weight the swelling

subsides in your intenstines and stomach area therefore allowing the Dr to

be able to see more clearly and less chance of leakage in the intestinal

area.

Hi Renae -

This is absolutely correct for lap patients. It is much less significant

for patients who wisely choose the open procedure. There are lap surgeons

who don't obsess about this, too. The ones who do are primarily in the NY

area and insist on doing the " pure " lap surgery.

Standing by for incoming - - -

Hello again Nick in Sage- D. in NYC here. Long time no speak!

Read your post and couldn't resist the opportunity to put my meager 2

cents in. Being that I had a fully lap procedure, and am here in NY,

I thought that perhaps you may have been referring to my surgeon as

one of those who " obsesses " over losing weight before surgery. If

this is the case, I thought I should just let you know that Dr. Ren

does NOT " obsess " over this. I can't speak for the other NY lap

surgeons, but I do know, from personal experience, that she does not.

She does, however, recommend a low-fat diet the week before surgery

as to help rid the liver of fat and thus reduce its size, making

surgery easier. In the recovery room she asked if I had eaten low-fat

the week before and I, in my anesthesia-induced stupor(hey, I'll

blame it on that when I can-haha), said " uh, yeah, sure. I wasn't

that bad. " And that was the truth. However, upon later contemplation,

I think saying that I was more protein-full focused than fat-free,

was a more accurate assesment.

She said my liver was just a little fatty and that's why she asked.

Hmm, maybe it was the Mc's steak, egg and cheese bagel sandwich

parked on my liver that I had as my last meal, the morning before

surgery! Hey, there's a lot of protein in that! Fat too,

unfortunately. Oops. I have subsequently confessed my transgression

and apologized if it made her job that much more difficult.

So, that's that. Again, just thought I'd relay my experience with my

surgeon. So far, so good at just over 2 weeks post-op. If it weren't

for the diarrhea(much of which was helped, I believe, with the

Lactaid), I'd be feeling perfectly and ready to do cartwheels!

Friends are already noticing a weight loss! I can't believe it.

Awesome! :)
