Guest guest
Hi , Prayers continue for Theresa. I was so glad to hear she is out of ICU and walking around. This stuff is very scary for those of us contemplating WLS - DS. How many of you have had the DS surgery without complications? I would really like to know. It usually sounds like complication rates are not too high, but then we see the complications, here. Put my fears to rest please. Guest guest
Thank you, Tina. I'm so glad your recovery was uneventful and fine. Although I do know the doctor will run tests and I am suffering a whole basketful of problems that are obesity related, surgery is such a big step. I have diabetes that is well-controlled (when I eat right and take my medicine which is certainly not happening right now) and I have a severe spinal disease that will not be cured by WLS, but will prepare me for the spinal surgery (2) that I need. Most of the time I am excited and want to have the surgery done, but sometimes I get cold feet and worry about deficiencies because I already have osteoporosis (related to the spinal disease). I know that I have to have life-long medical care anyway, so that part doesn't worry me. The deficiencies do, and the actual surgery does, as well. Thanks for listening. Guest guest
Five and counting! Thank you, Judie (and spouse) for answering. I am feeling better and glad to hear that there are a number of you that had no bad symptoms or experiences! I'm 48 so it is very nice to know that you are both in my age group and had such great success! Congratulations and thank you for responding. Hugs, Ann

Guest guest
Hello to all. Just spoke to Theresa in the hospital and she's doing very well. She was brought out of ICU earlier and is now in her own room. She sounded fantastic and told me that she was getting ready to take a walk with . We agreed that it really does bite that they had to open her, but the good news, as wrote, was that she had no leak, so thank God for that. Keep up those Christmas prayers! Best,
Guest guest
Hi Ann! Dr. K said my surgery went " great " and that I had no problems at all. I had a very smooth time of it in the hospital and found the pain to be completely manageable. Hope that helps you. Tracey in Santee (San Diego) > Hi , > Prayers continue for Theresa. Guest guest
Ann, As of this tuesday (yes X-mas day) I will be 6 months post-op...I had smooth recovery and have been well up until now (knock on wood)...Other than the gas (which I had pre-op anyway) the early bm's and the nice weight loss...life is pretty much the same! Guest guest
Ann, I put myself in the no complication section, although I would have actually been considered to have a complication which, in my opinion, skews the complication rates. Surgery went smoothly, etc but at about 2 weeks a little pinhole spot in my incision opened and began draining fluid that had built up under my incision. I definitely would have it drain then just stay under my incision and get infected, so I'm glad it opened. I also considered it more of a pain in the ass having to change the dressings often than an actual complication. You have to keep in mind that complications do get magnified on this list because if you're not doing well, you ask for advice, commiseration or support from the list. The complication rate for DS surgery is about 10%, but keep in mind, that it ranges from your IV site itching, incisional drainage or infection, which can be very minor to very annoying depending on how soon you treat it and how long it lasts, to the surface of your wound opening slightly, to major complications. Most often than not, people tend to have minor complications, like mine, which I don't really consider a complication at all as it prevented a more serious complication where I might have gotten an infection under my incision which would have taken longer to treat. Guest guest
I have had no serious complications since Dec. 5, 2000 (when I had the sleeve gastrectomy) till today. Both parts went well. There was a little discomfort at first, but that is to be expected after any surgery. Every day I thank my lucky stars for Dr. Gagner and the recovery I have had thus far.
