Guest guest
Jeanne, Does Olivia have an IEP?? If not, I think a 504 Plan would work for this. But you need to have it written into either plan that she needs to eat at such and such intervals, and this will FORCE the teachers to follow your requests. I would go over the teacher's head to the Principal and ask for some help with the situation. Until something can be done, could you go into school and insure that she eats well, at least at lunch?? Guest guest
Pat, Thanks for your reply. I most sound really naive, but I don't know what a IEP or 504 plan is. Like I said before, Olivia has done really well and she hasn't had my issues. She is almost 6yrs and weighs 38lbs and is 42 " . She is on periatic and Zantac 2x/day and night feeds of 250ml of peptamin in g-tube - no GHT (yet). She has had amazing progress since she got her g-tube 2 1/2yrs ago when she weighed 20lbs at 3 1/4yrs. So I know we are really lucky, but now I really have to advocate for her and take this more seriously now that I have less control of her day. I would appreciate a little more info in IEP and 504 plan. But, in the meantime I am going to talk to the primary school head. Her son is diabetic so she should be understanding. Thanks again, Jeanne Mom to Olivia-rss 5 3/4yrs and 22mos - non-rss. pcpets wrote: Jeanne, Does Olivia have an IEP?? If not, I think a 504 Plan would work for this. Guest guest
Hi Jeanne, My son is 8 and in the third grade. He is also on periactin and growth hormone. The periactin works good. The growth hormone also works good but for him the combination is great. Anyway, 504 referrs to Section 504 of the Americans with Disabilities Act. It requires a school or other public facility to make accomadations for children with special needs. This can be anything from smaller desk or chairs to a laptop or easier openig doors or smaller toilets. Whatever is required for her to fully participate in school. An IEP stand for Individual Education Plan. It is a contract between you and the school to provide services and accomodations for a child if they have a medical condition that interferes with them obtaining a " Free and Appropriate Education " in a " Least Restrictive Environment " . This can be anything from speech therapy (which my son needs) to an aid to help with lunch etc. However, to get these services, the school must conduct an evaluation which you must request. In some school districts this can be hard to do because it is expensive and time consuming and some schools don't have the funds or resources to do this even though they are required by law once they have identified a child under the Child Find provisions. The IEP, Child find, and FAPE are all part of IDEA Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. To find out more, I would suggest you have a friendly conversaation with your schools Special Education Coordinator (SPED coordinator) and discuss your concerns. We had a similar problem and in our case the school let my wife come in a few days a week to ahve lunch with my son. They also asked one of the aids working wqith another child to make sure my son drank at least 2 ounces of juice a day and ate some of the food we sent in. We asked her not to push the food by to gently remind him to eat. It worked OK but not great. The aid would often go too far and insist he eat. We had to have more than one meeting on this. Anyway, eats by himself now. Some days, he eats only his snack and other days, we don't send enough food. It is hard to predict. I hope this helps. Ken M > Jeanne, > > Does Olivia have an IEP??
