THANK YOU ALL for the great tips and suggestions on teaching my seven

year old how to read! Sorry this took so long to reply but

Thanksgiving got in the middle of things . . . Hope everyone had a

good holiday - I spent about six hours in the kitchen and made

virtually everything from scratch since this was the first

Thanksgiving we have all five been gfcf (at least at home for the

husband). Anyway, back to reading, a few of you mentioned dyslexia and

that is a possibility since it runs heavily on both sides of the

family. And I guess we will have to get a library card even if the

three year old does try his best to mangle books. (He loves books so I

don't know why he likes to step on them and bend the covers back when

I'm not looking!) I have heard of (vary favorably) 100 Easy Lessons to

Teach Your Child to Read and I think we might have Picture It - if not

it sounds great. Since we have three kids, I'm not as worried about

spending money to get something they can all use. The five year old is

using Explode The Code and really loves it - I will try it on the

oldest. A short attention span is a short attention span so the book

" Teaching Reading to Children with Downs Syndrome " sounds good. Sing,

Spell, Read and Write I have also heard of but not Play and Talk or

Alpha Phonics. I will check them out. I will also see if our local

library has the high priced phonics programs to try out first before

buying. Great idea! As a child, my most valued possession was my

library card. I want my kids to love reading as much as I do. Every

room in this house (except the bathroom - too small) has at least one

bookcase full of books and reading out loud to the kids is a common

occurrence. I know, when the oldest learns to read, he will enjoy it.

He has a wonderful imagination and what better way to expand on that

than through reading? Thanks everyone for your help!!! Penny
