Guest guest
I have some additional questions I hope the list can help me with.... Is the gallbladder usually removed with a DS surgery? If so, why? Who on the list has or has not lost their gallbladder, and why did your surgeon choose to proceed that way? I've heard that losing weight quickly can lead to gallstones, but it sounds pretty dramatic to remove an organ simply as a preventative measure! Thanks, Deb C. Guest guest
Dear Deb, My surgeon removes the gallbladder during wls on a case by case basis. I had a pre-op gallbladder scan that showed that my gallbladder was perfectly healthy. I was told that approx. 20% of folks that lose weight rapidly (either by dieting or wls) may develop gallstones. Sometimes, patients develop gallstones but never have a problem and never need their gallbladders removed. My surgeon puts her patients with gallbladders intact on Actigall to prevent gallstones. Personally, I wanted to keep my gallbladder. My husband had his gallbladder removed one year ago and still suffers from diarrhea, heartburn and intolerance of fats. He also has some pulling pains which his surgeon said is adhesions forming which is common after gallbladder surgery. With advanced technology the way it is, if I have any unexplained abdominal pain there are alot of high tech scans that can find the problem right away. I didn't feel that randomly taking out organs was the way to go for me. My PCP did a gallbladder ultrasound a couple of months ago during my routine physical just for the heck of it and my gallbladder is still perfectly healthy. Just my .02 Jodi 38 yrs.
