Danmar or Hanger?

Hello, i am the Mum who asked the question about specialist Vs hanger last week.

We went to the specialist's office last Wednes and my 5-mon daughter was

diagnosed as plagio. There are three index (forhead, ear and backhead) involved

and they gave her the Danmar Helmet right away and ask us to come back in 8

weeks. Since i knew very few about the helmet at that time and i just asked them

what the difference between the custom helmet and the helmet they used. The doc

told me the Danmar does not push the head and also has successful cases. And it

will need about 40weeks to finish the treatment.

I searched online about Danmar helmet after i came home and read some of the

posts here. Most of the babies get custom helmets(DOC, Hanger, Star) but not

Danmar. I also have some big concerns about the Danmar after we used for a week:

For example, it fits my baby's head very poorly, the helmet always rotates and

shakes even though they put some pads inside to help that; Some article said

that there are only 27% improvement for Danmar but about 61% success for custom

helmets. We do not see any obvious improvement about head shape after a whole

week.

I am really worried about the result if we stick to Danmar helmet. Our town has

a hanger office and i called them and was told it might cost $2000 to get helmet

there and our insurance won't cover it. My worry is not only about the money but

the result for the treatment, most of you could understand me since we do want

improvement after our babies suffer so much.

So my question is : shall we go to the hanger's office and get a helmet there?

Any advise about Danmar and Hanger's helmets will be appreciated!

there have been successful cases of correction with danmar if you look way back (we havent hasd anyone i know of use one in quite some time on here) but yes it is a passive helmet so results take much longer.  i was going to say at least 6 mo but i see they told you 40 wks so i guess 8-9 months is more like it.  compared to an active helmet like hanger takes about 4 months so half the time.  i wouldonly recommend trying the Danmar if your child is under 6 months but i see your child is under 6 months.  They can only fix the head until about 18-24 months.  in 40 wks your baby will be 14 months.  I would say you have 2 options, to either look into insurance and see if they have a specific exclusion.  without one you have a 50/50 chance of getting something covered but it could be out of network so could still cost you a good chunk.  you can also (if you have the $$) see if hanger has a self pay, paid in full discount or if you cant do that a payment plan.  ppl on here have had all of these options happen.  and then to decide to go with the hanger now.  the other option would be to go with the danmar until 9-12 ish months old and see if theres been improvement, if there has been you can give it the 40 wks they state.  if there hasnt you could go with the hanger then as she would not be too old.  if there is and you wait the 40 wks she could still get a hanger, typically, at 14-15 months old if there isnt enough improvement.

My daughter Camille is a recent Danmar Helmet graduate. We got the helmet is August of 2010 and at the time she was 8 months old. She wore the helmet until January 14th 2011 and at the time she was 13 months old. We did not have any problems at all with the helmet and her correction went from 9mm down to 2mm in that time.

Feel free to contact me if you have more specific questions. I will be happy to help.

My son is 7 months old and he wears a hanger helmet. We had his 2 week check

up last monday ... His measurements went from 20mm down to 13mm in 2 weeks and 3

days...

Our helmet was 2500, and there should be local businesses in your town that

raise money for this type of things for children. Our insurance denied the

helmet, I appealed it and they still denied it. I started talking to people in

my community and found out that there are people who will help you so if you are

in need of money don't be afraid to ask.

Hope I was a little helpful... Good luck
