The function of the Pylorus...an unusual description

I don't know about most of you other DS folk, but I had never heard of the

pylorus valve before my research into WLS surgery.

Last night as I was reading a most excellent novel (Mother of Pearl by Melinda

Haynes) there occurred, in a conversation between

two characters, a description of the pylorus' function . it's really a total

hoot, considering that we sometimes are accused of

focusing too much on the pylorus....And I thought others might enjoy the little

snip from this book. (edited)

The young boy talking about the pylorus, is in a mental institution. The

person he is talking to is a priest.

The boy says: " You see that man?...He's here 'cause he thinks his pyloric valve

isn't working. "

" Pyloric valve? " the priest questioned... " I'm afraid I'm at a loss here...whats

the pyloric valve? "

" Well, in a nutshell, and I'm not absolutely positive on this seein' how I got

the scoop from another man here...Anyhow-the pyloric

valve is this tiny little valve and its only job in the whole wide world is to

keep shit from backin' up into the stomach and possibly

bein' puked out the mouth- "

He slapped the priests leg " Imagine that....all that's keepin' our shit where

it's upposed to be is a tiny flap of skin. "

" Joleb, I'm not a doctor, but I'm sure there's more- "

" Nah-got it straight from somebody who has been here a long time...well now

that man over there...he's afraid his ain't workin'.

And he can manage this fear most of the time, but ever so often or so they find

him wanderin' around with his belt tight against

his waist and rubber stoppers every where to keep everything where it's at. "

If you have a chance to get this book, I highly recommend it...and I'll never

again be at a loss to tell my surgeon why I think the

pylorus is important, especially since she now is offering the Scoparino version

of the BPD, which removes that pylorus.
