Guest guest
Hi Deb, You are right. The weight for stature chart do not work for the older kids. Do you have the CDs that were given out at the convention? These are great. You can enter all the data you have for Adam over the years & it will plot his weight & height & calculate his BMI. I plugged in the data you listed in your post. At age 9yrs, 7 months, his BMI was 15.1 and now it is 17.4. If you then plot these BMI values on the boys: 2 to 20 years CDC growth chart body mass index (BMI), you can see the percentiles. At age 9 years, 7 months, Adam was just below the 25th percentile weight for height and now he falls just above the 25th percentile weight for height. It took me a long time to figure out how to do this. I asked several times on this listserve & nobody had answers. i finally figured out how to do it on my own. If you do not have the CDs, you can still figure out Adam's BMi at various ages if you have good data for his weight and heights. The formula to figure out BMI is: weight in kilograms divided by height in meters divided by height in meters OR weight in lbs. divided by height in inches divided by height in inches times 703 You should get a number somewhere between 12 and 20ish. You plot this on the BMI chart by age and then you can where your data fits in between the percentile lines. Thus, at age 13, if you want him to be between the 10th and 25th percentile weight for height (Dr. H's recommendation), you would want his BMI to be between 16 and 17. Hope all this makes sense. I know it is very confusing. You can email me privately if you have questions at capuano_k@.... If I don't answer you right away, it is because I lost power due to Hurricane Wilma. Unfortunately, I am in the direct path & our weather should start deteriorating in the middle of the night. Kim C. > Well I finally found the time to get to the growth charts. How > disappointing. The charts don't go high enough for Adam. These > " weight-for-stature " charts only go to 120 cm and Adam is 138. 3 cm > and 33.2 kg (well he WAS back in June). > I was looking forward to figuring this out. Now if I go all the way > back to when he was under 120 cm. (I have one measurement at 9 > years, 7 months old) He was 117.9 cm and 21 kg that puts him smack > tab in the middle of the 25th to 50th percentile. > So does that mean it's too much? Or just right? I was just hoping > he would make the 15th. > Anyone have any thoughts on where I can get " bigger " charts and/or > what it means to be in the 25th-50th percentiles? > > Deb >
