Guest guest
Hi Gang!! I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving!! Well, I just got the results back from my four-month labs, and everything was fine except my protein, the MOST CRUCIAL ONE OF ALL!! It is at 4.8, and I was told it should be between 6 - 8.3. My doctor told me I should be increasing my protein anyway, since my hair is falling out by the handfuls. So, what I'd like to ask you all is what suggestions you may have for some good protein snacks? I can't STAND the jerky -- I admit it, I just can't get past that feeling that I'm eating a DOG TREAT!! I don't much care for string cheese, either, but if that's what it takes, then I'll eat that. Also, I suppose I could buy some of the protein powders that are out there. I know we've been over THIS subject a MILLION times, but I am interested in hearing what powders you folks like to use, and if you have any ideas for a good " smoothie " to go with them? Thanks for your input!! Hugs, Pam in MD BPD/DS - July 9, 2001 Dr. Vanguri
Guest guest
Hi Pam, I was given this recipe by a RNY post-op at a support meeting. It has lots of protein and is good. Start with about 1/2 container of cottage cheese, half of a yogurt, add some sweet and low, then 1/2 - 1 whole ripe banana. Then I use ProBlend 55 Strawberry Powder...2 scoops is 55 grams of protein. Then fill in the cracks with some milk of your choice and mix all together in the blender. Then I drop in ice cubes and continue blending until it is creamy and icy. It makes more than one serving, so you can cut back on the amount you mix of everything. But I find that what I don't use will stay thick until I get it out of the fridge for the next glass full. It tastes almost like a strawberry banana shake... almost, but not quite. Sheri lap/open DS 9/28/01 Dr Herron/Mt Sinai/NYC -39 lbs
Guest guest
> > So, what I'd like to ask you all is what suggestions you may have for some > good protein snacks?>>>>> Hi, Pam: Do you like dairy? I snack on yogurt (Dannon Light is great-tasting but only has something like 16 gms/sugar. I hate the non-fat/no sugar ones and the regular yogurts have way too much sugar), cottage cheese, various cheeses (Sorrento's cheese sticks are a great easy grab from the fridge - they have a cheddar stick that's great). I also love NUTS -- peanuts, cashews, almonds.... Soy nuts are good, too. What else? Those White Castle microwavable hamburgers are great! Just pop a pack in the microwave and it's a quick fix. Kashi Go Lean cereal has a whopping 8 gm/protein per serving... add milk and voila! That's 14 gms or so in a snack. I suppose you could also mix the Go Lean in yogurt, etc. kind of like a trail mix/granola... I also like the peanut butter and cheese crackers.. some brands have more protein than others but they are very portable and filling... > > Also, I suppose I could buy some of the protein powders that are out there. > I know we've been over THIS subject a MILLION times, but I am interested in > hearing what powders you folks like to use, and if you have any ideas for a > good " smoothie " to go with them?>>>>>> Well, I'm too lazy to try smoothies or anything like that. I've used the Designer Protein chocolate (with milk) and that's nice. I've also used Schiff Pharmacies Women's Natural Replacement VAnilla Soy powder (at GNC). It has a really pleasant, mild taste and has some cranberry mixed in it. I've also tried the Metroplex tropical flavors -- they have pina colada, peach, orange and they are good but extremely, extremely THICK. Now, I love the ISOPURE strawberry packs. They can be easily mixed with water (with a fork no less - no need for a hand blender - that's how lazy I am! LOL). The flavor is much, much lighter than any of the other shakes I've had (which were really filling). Each pack has 50 gms/protein but I only use half a pack at a time. Ice makes any protein shake taste better, imho. Hope this helps somewhat! all the best, lap ds with gallbladder removal January 25, 2001 Dr. Gagner/Mt. Guest guest
Hi there.. I discovered a chocolate drink called Carb Solutions. It has 4 grams of carbs per serving (1 9.5 oz bottle) and only 1 gram of sugar. Best of all it has 20 grams of protein. I get mine at Walmart. One note, it is really sweet. It took me a while to get used to it. I am pretty sure it has splenda in it. Good luck! Cheers! Liz N.
