Our ped requires a visit to a craniofacial surgeon before prescribing a helmet.

The craniofacial surgeon, in turn, refuses to write the script because in their

experience, scripts from them are refused by insurance because it's classified

as cosmetic. They refuse to be nice and save the parents the hassle of fighting

with insurance.

that our PT requested our pediatrician refer us to a craniofacialist. Who has

seen one of these? Are they going to tell me anything that an eval with a

starband or docband provider won't tell me? Will they be able to tell me if they

are sure it's plagio and not a chance that it's cranio? Our PT doubts cranio b/c

she is so alert (didn't know that was something that cleared a diagnosis). She

does have a weird ridge in the middle right side of the back of her head (where

the flat spot it). Again...talking to ped on Thursday but just curious as to

everyone's experiences.

we saw a cranio facial plastic surgeon and he measured my daughters head and

told us about our options (basically band now or band later in our case). He

wrote our prescription and referred us for a starband. At that point I didn't

know there were options, and just went where he suggested - but lucky for us the

guy was good. If I knew more I would have asked about star vs doc etc. However

there was no docband in our area, and I'm sure we would have ended up with the

same provider. (a good starband provider vs all that travel).

A " weird ridge " is definitely something to check out. My daughter has a big

head, which grew very fast and our ped had some concerns about hydrocephalus,

but not too much because my daughter was also alert and showed no delays. We did

some tests to rule it out and now she's still happy and healthy with a big head,

but it stays on the growth curve. It will be good to rule out any problem with

the ridge before you start with your band.

Let us know how she does.
