I wonder if the other StarBand folks on the board can share how often they did

adjustments. Maybe it will ease your mind if they had similar experiences. I'm

pretty sure it's standard for all the Cranial Tech locations that they do

1x/week for younger babies, and 2x/week for older babies because their heads

grow more slowly. At my appts they show me a model of the original head shape,

feel the baby's head, point out any changes, check progress of tort if it

applies, measure the size of the head for growth, and shave a little bit out of

the helmet. I don't know what the standard procedure is for StarBands, but I'm

sure someone on here does.

on the 12th of July and has a moderately mishapen head in the terms of our

physical therapist (she is a twin...and it's probably a result of intrauterine

restriction...she was the one that was 'stuck' most of the time). It is pushing

her right ear and right forehead forwards and we have been repositioning since 2

month appt. She does not have any visual assymetry to the eyes or the cheek

bones though. We were referred to a craniofacialist at Riley and i have been in

discussion with both a Starband provider in Indianapolis and a Cranial Tech

facility in the Chicago suburbs. The Cranial tech facility said at her age she

would require weekly adjustments. The starband provider said after her first

week appt (after the adjustment period) she would come back monthly. That is

quite a difference...the orthotist for the starband helmet has 2 years

experience (i have spoken with him personally).

eval with the starband provider next week (they are doing a home visit with the

meet them too. Cranial Tech provider would be about an hour more of a drive (1

1/2 vs. 2 1/2 hours). My parents have offered to help with the drives... Both

My son started his STARband when he was 6.5 months old and we went for adjustments every 3 weeks.  Of course, if we were having any red spots showing that the band was getting too tight we could have gone in sooner than the three week appointment.

is correct with regards to the Cranial Tech adjustments - 1x/week for younger babies (usually under 6 months), 2x/week for older babies (usually 6-12 months) and 3x/week if older than 1 year old.

My daughter wore a STARband in 2002. We did 3 week appointments. She was 9 months and her growth was slow. We also had the understanding that they would get her right in if she needed to be seen sooner.

For Starband it is longer than for Docband. We went monthly for

Starband in the beginning, but was 12 months. -Kathy

Hi ,

There is no way monthly is okay for a young baby. My daughter started at 2 week

adjustments with a starband, and after age 6 mo or so she switched to 3 weeks.

However most of the time we went in a few days early for an adjustment. If you

are getting only monthly adjustments they would have to leave too much room for

growth in the band, and it wouldn't be doing very much work. It couldn't even be

called " active " if you ask me. I think the starband can work very well, but

personally I wouldn't go to a provider that only wants to see your baby once a

month.

was 15 months and we went monthly. First visit was two weeks, then 3 weeks, and then monthly. I was told that younger babies went every two weeks. I am not sure if there is an age where they do 3 weeks, but there could be.

Hi !

I'm a lurker on this board, but wanted to reply to you.

I'm in the Indy area and my son has a Starband with Midwest Orthotics. We

started at 7 months, and have been in the band 3 months now (we actually go for

an adjustment today). We have had no issues with the " monthly " schedule. In

fact, I've found that between the first few weeks where they see you more

frequently, and adjustments that I've requested before our next " monthly "

appointment, we actually go in every 2-3 weeks.

Plus, our orthotist (Josh) gave us his cell phone number and volunteered to come

in on a weekend if I ever felt that my son needed an adjustment badly enough.

(I was worried about what we would do if we had an angry spot first thing on a

Friday morning and couldn't be seen until Monday. I didn't want to lose 3 days

of wear. Luckily, we've never found anything that we couldn't deal with over

the weekend.)

I know how tough it is to find providers and other moms in our area. Please

feel free to email me if you have questions. indyrowergirl at gmail dot com

Hi ,

Our daughter was put into her band at about 4 months with Cranial Technologies.

We live 5 hours one way from Dallas. We took her every week for a month and

then every two weeks for almost 4 or 5 months (she was in a band for a little

over 7 months). When she was around 10 months, we were able to stretch out her

appointments to 3 weeks. The Star Band and the Cranial band are different...at

your daughter's age, her skull is growing very rapidly. You want to capture

every amount of growth you can right now because the skull will never grow at

this speed again. Cranial bands are aggressive bands which is why they need

adjusting more often. We had a hanger facility where we live, but the band they

make was just going to be to bulky for my daughter. I know many people have had

luck with the Starband but I personally say go to to Cranial if you don't mind

the hour extra drive. You won't be sorry. They are excellent and this is all

they do. Because your insurance covers both, then I definitely say go with

Cranial. We drove 10 hours round trip for a long long time...you are much

closer so it can be done. You can see my daughter's results under

photos...Sloane Witham is her archive. Good Luck-

Hi ,My daughter had her DOC band from 3 to 5 months.  We went weekly for adjustments, and I would say there was only one week that I didn't notice an area that needed adjustment, prior to my trip out there.  Obviously my daughter had a significant amount of growth to graduate in two months.   But isn't that the goal with banding so young.  Although on the flip side it is a significant time commitment to go weekly.

I think that it is hard for people that haven't had a good STARband to understand how it can need adjusting less frequently and still be just as effective. Yes, it starts out a little looser all over, but within a couple of weeks, it is fitted in the holding places, but the bands are made so that there is lots of room for growth in the areas that need growing. For a brachy STARband, babies need to add 3 to 4 cm of growth to the circumferance of the head before the back needs any shaving out of it. My daughter grew 1.5 cm during the 6 months in her band (she was quite a bit older) and the back did not need any shaving at all. It sounds as though doc bands are almost always shaved at every appointment and there have been a few posts that indicate that some people have had

issues with too much shaving that affected results. So, shaving when it isn't needed isn't ideal either.

The thing that I don't understand is whether this is the same for the plagio STAR bands. I do know that my coworker's son grew about 3 cm while in his plagio band. He had appointments every two weeks (5.5 months when starting), but they did not always need to shave anything. He had great improvement - going from about 16 mm to 3 mm in about 11 weeks (with two of those part time wear). As it was for us, the appointments were sometimes just to make sure that things were going okay and to check on the amount of improvement. As I said in a previous post, we went monthly, but we probably would have been fine going every 2 months and then calling with any concerns. So, it could be possible for a monthly appointment to be established, as long as there was availability to move this up if needed and to call an ortho to discuss concerns. I could see where a mobile unit could be able to reach more babies by doing it this way.

In terms of which band to go with, obviously you should check out all of the options and the benefits of each before deciding.
