Guest guest
Hi , has been in the s for about 6 weeks and although her feet are not fat, her legs/ankles are very fat. She weighed 17 pounds, 5 ounces at 4 months so yes, she is a big girl! Anyway, I tighten up the straps as much as I can and although it displaces the fat (a temporary thing just due to the shoes) and pushes it all up above the ankle, I have not gotten the impression that her circulation is compromised at all. Hers are so tight that I can see the marks of the straps imprinted on her feet, too. I don't think you can cut off the circulation on the baby's feet with the shoes. Guest guest
Not dumb at all...in fact, I was so obsessed and worried about this that I cut holes in all the socks I put on her (the new ones too...lol) for about a month! She was always Ok though. Sometimes her foot would turn a little red right after putting them on for about 1/2 hour, but would then be Ok. I kinda felt silly for cutting up good socks after a while. I dont do it anymore, but I use cotton tights. Partially cause they dont bunch up as easily, but I guess part of that obsession is still there as I can stretch the tights to see if her feet look Ok. The chubbiness plumping out is Ok. Just watch out for that middle strap. Lilee has had some trouble with it. Not to say as you would. Good luck and congrats on the P/M's! P.S. Did Shriners pay for them? Are they still in debate over them? Guest guest
I don't think you really can cut off circulation, since the Markells are always made extremely tight (I think tighter than the PM's for sure) and it hasn't really popped up yet as an issue. The leather will stretch on the PM's soon too. It will stretch at night while worn even, and maybe seem a bit looser in the am than the night before. If they hurt him, he'll tell you. If you want to check though, you can cut a hole in the toe of his socks and watch his feet. Then again, even if they did turn a bit purple it doesn't seem to matter. Darbi's whole legs were purple at times when she first wore the Markells and Sussman told me not to worry about that. Of course I did but it never seemed to bother her at the time. the really fatty puffy feet (i.e. infant or fresh out of casts are often like this) can puff a bit between the straps. I am pretty sure that's on the normal side... Don't worry unless you hear him fussing and/or when you take them off in the am there's some kind of sore or bad red marks. His feet *are* on the sensitive side (pressure wise) so you might see a bit more red than you're used to but over time they should get less red (while out of the shoes) and as he gets used to these his feet are also going to get a little tougher in that respect. I've heard this kid cry... he'll tell you if there's something not cool with his shoes LOL! Kori At 07:32 PM 3/11/2006, you wrote: >We just got the 's (yeah) and things are going great. Guest guest
Hayden has the exact same feet - chubby little size zeros! I have not had any trouble with circulation on his feet in the s and I actually had the orthotist punch extra holes in the straps to get them tighter. The center strap I have to pull pretty tight to get it to fasten. The only thing I have noticed is that sometimes he has a slight red mark across the top of his foot where that strap lays. I think the top strap should be snug, but not too tight because that is where you could run into circulation troubles. Hope that helps! wrote: We just got the 's (yeah) and things are going great. Guest guest
No, Shriners did not pay for them. It was a big deal I guess-administration had to get involved and everything. was in AFO's for a long time and our dr at Shriners wanted to keep him in them. The dr was even hesitant to put him in the Markells because he thought the AFO's were doing *ok*. He said that I didn't need the s. Not too happy with him at the moment. I can't wait to go back in there in June for his next appointment and when the dr tells me how great s feet look tell him that we have been in the PM's the whole time! Guest guest
AWW, Im sorry about that. Luckily Lilee got new shoes (1 pair they bought, 2 pair she's needed. I paid for the first cause Shriners wasnt our Dr. at the time) right before Aiona and Sussman started haggling over it. You must have Aiona then? Lilee has been having a hard time with middle straps and sores that I couldnt even call then to get advice for fear that would throw more fire in the pit, ya know. Sad when Dr.'s are so 'old school' that they are unwilling and ignorant to other wonderful choices! Lilee's sore have been dealt with my 2 local Peditricians, a local Ped-Orthotist, and Josh be phone all working together. I hate to see when Lilee needs her next pair. I'll really tell them what I think! >:o/ I will have to find a way to pay for them ourselves! Wont be too long. She grew out of her first pair in 2 1/2 months! It's been about that now. Just got a letter from Shriner's today too telling us they changed our appt. for 2 weeks further! >:o/ OoooK, why!? I expect she will need a new pair in probably another 2 months or so? Guest guest
when I first came here, all the pictures of CF kids who wore the Markells had feet that looked like they'd been compressed in shoes (Markells were only option at the time) with fatty calves above the top of the shoe edge. I fully expected exactly that after ranking on Darbi's feet like I had to to get her in lol... however it only appeared slightly. But... it did happen. It's normal for these feet to have a *shoed* look for the first year or two I'm pretty sure. So far, this has never shown up as an issue. They grow into them nicely. I find it pretty amazing what these feet can handle as far as pressure. When they get more mature, they're a totally different foot. There's none of that going on with Darbi and these larger PM's have straps much further apart than the little ones. At this age, all that fat is gone and it's a nice bony foot so it doesn't squish out at all. But at first, yeah, all that baby stuff does get a bit squashed in the shoes and it looks a bit funny when they're off. Guest guest
made our shoes a little bit bigger so can wear them a little longer. When I talked to there I kept telling her Shriners wouldn't pay and she was very surprised. Anyway, yes I do see Dr. Aiona - Don't get me wrong, Ia m grateful for all they have done, but i was just really confused as to why they were denying me these shoes. You know, they have changed my appointment 3 times for further out too. My dh said they were afraid of me so they were pushing me back! LOL ! Sweet little me? LOL! We actually snuck in to s room with scissors and a flashlight last night to cut a hole in his socks - I thought my dh was going to commit me or something! His toes were nice and pink and now this morning his feet are fine - not even any bad red marks. Thanks for all your help you guys. At least I got some sleep last night!
