Guest guest
My wife had her surgery today here in Phoenix. The surgeon said once inside he would look at the pancreas and either do a Whipple or a Total Pancreatotamy. After 4.5 hours, he came out and advised me that he did a Total Pan as well as removed the spleen and part of the Duodenum. He sent a tissue specimen to the pathologist that he wanted evaluated. She is resting comfortably in Surgical ICU overnight and I'll know more about the impact of the removal of both the spleen and the Pancreas tomorrow. I know about the Diabetic part but not sure about living without a spleen. Doc.
Guest guest
*** Would any of you know if it's common to remove the spleen as well when having a Total Pancreatectomy? Thanks, Doc. ***

Guest guest
Hi Doc, I'd like to wish your wife a speedy recovery. I, too, had my spleen removed when i had pancreatic surgery. The spleen is concerned with protection from infection. Therefore, i take penicillin tablets twice daily as a prophalictic measure. Medical opinion on whether you should do this and how long for, varies, as it does with so many things. My surgeon promotes prophalactic penicillin for life. Best wishes to you both.
