Guest guest
From what I know, baby mattresses are very firm for safety reasons (sids). The thing I think should be stressed is to vary the child's head position when you put them to sleep. I realize with tort this may not be easy/possible but I might have done a lot with my daughter if I knew this was important. Also besides the crib mattress there are all the other things that keep them on their heads too much of the time like swings and car seats (used as a carrier, with stroller or for napping outside the car). At least if you can limit it to time when they are actually sleeping, there will be less pressure on the head. -christine sydney, 4.5 yrs, starband grad > > I had this thought last night, just want to bring it up here and see if anyone has the similar feeling. The crib mattress that we use is a safety 1st foam mattress we bought from Walmart. When I was preparing baby's stuff before my son's birth, I was told to get firmest mattress out there. so that's what we did. but just now I realize that this mattress is much firmer than the one I sleeps on! and when I press it with my fist, I can only create a little deformation in there. I'm suspecting that would have contributed to my son's plagio since too much pressure was on his skull when he sleeps. > > So moms of plagio babies please tell me, how firm are your crib mattresses? >
Guest guest
You know, I had the exact same thought a while ago. We have a Naturepedic extra firm mattress and I'm positive it has contributed to my DD's brachy/pagio issue. We tried the Boppy Head Nest in the crib once just to see how her head would be positioned and it was a huge difference which would have probably saved us from the band (the head nest is not recommended for use on horizontal surfaces though). Guest guest
, thanks for your reply. I do understand that crib mattresses are firm for reducing suffocation hazards. But hey, most babies can't turn over in the first 3 months right? (or at least in the first 2 months) And if you put them down sleep on the back, I can't imagine there is a way they can be suffocated by a softer bed. But for plagio kids, plagiocephaly/brachycephaly is often noticed within the first 3 months right? So maybe we can at least have babies sleep on not-so-firm mattresses before they can turn over? > > > > I had this thought last night, just want to bring it up here and see if anyone has the similar feeling. Guest guest
its funny you mention this because i was just complaining to my husband about how horrified i was when i rencently realized jusy how HARD our crib mattress is! and this was an expensive mattress and yes i do remember hearing to get a firm one and so did that. .....mind you my older child who did NOT get plagio slept on this crib matress for 3 years! i am shocked that his little head is ok! my plagio baby actually slept on a softly padded baby co sleeper.....and still got plagio...because he jut never moved. danielle > > I had this thought last night, just want to bring it up here and see if anyone has the similar feeling. Guest guest
Yes, my daughter also didn't move when she slept, but part of this was our fault because we swaddled her.
