Guest guest
I'm concerned about your comment about the salads and fruits. How long have you been giving her raw fruits and veggies? Also, corn or potato chips are definitely not SCD legal foods. You could make your own carrot chips by slicing carrots, and frying them until crisp. Meleah Need Chips and Dairy Advice Hi everyone... We have been SCD (without dairy at all) for about 9 months now, my daugther is 9 years old full blown autism... When i started out i kept variety to a minimum as i didnt know how to cook going into the diet (single dad with no one to guide me!) and that worked great for a long time since my daughter loves salad, fruit etc... Its not working anymore. She is refusing to eat her dishes at school and even is throwing apples and once her entire meal... So...While we will stay on this diet (for many reasons) forever, i am needing to expand things...I am baking lots more cookies and banana breads and things but need advice on adding chips and dairy... I want to add yogert and butter to her diet. But she is autistic and i am afraid of adding ANY casein stuff to her diet. What do the autistic parents out there think of adding yogert and butter? I want to also add fun crunchy stuff for snacks and am thinking very hard of adding organic corn chips on the weekends and adding sweet potato and taro root chips for snacks at school and home (these are the ONLY chips i can find that dont have corn syrup or sugar or other crap in them at Whole Foods grocery)... We have been full SCD (without dairy) up to this point, and quite frankly have seen no improvement in her autism after 9 months (although she spends 3 nights a week at her moms and her mom i am certain has allowed her to cheat here and there so it makes it very hard to evaluate the full effect of the diet, but thats another rant)... Children with autism improve dramatically with the SCD goat yogurt! Improvements are seen in digestion, speech and behavior. The yogurt making process changes the structure of the casein and renders it harmless. Most children do tolerate the goat yogurt if it done the right way by starting out with a tiny amount and gradually increasing the amount. There is no risk in trying since the casein leaves the body after several days. > > I want to also add fun crunchy stuff for snacks and am thinking very > hard of adding organic corn chips on the weekends and adding sweet > potato and taro root chips for snacks at school and home (these are the > ONLY chips i can find that dont have corn syrup or sugar or other crap > in them at Whole Foods grocery)... Corn is a big " no no " as it contains dissaccharides and so is the root beggie taro. We make SCD chips with thinly sliced beets, carrot curls and butternut squash. They are delicous! Here are recipes for carrot curls and squash chips: http://www.pecanbread.com/recipes.html > > We have been full SCD (without dairy) up to this point, and quite > frankly have seen no improvement in her autism after 9 months (although > she spends 3 nights a week at her moms and her mom i am certain has > allowed her to cheat here and there so it makes it very hard to > evaluate the full effect of the diet, but thats another rant)... > SCD demands strict adherence and if your daughter is getting " illegals " outside the home it could definitely be impairing progress as small infractions cause rapid proliferation of bad bacteria. You will need to find a way to dialogue with your 'ex " for the good of your child, randy. i know this is not an easy task. Carol F. Guest guest
Randy, I am thinking that you probably have not seen improvement of her autism symptoms because of all the infractions that are probably happening when she is not with you. Did you do the Intro Diet? Did you keep her limited to all peeled and cooked fruits and veggies for a good long time in the beginning months? Or did you start right off with salads and raw fruits? If you add corn chips, tarot or sweet potato chips, she will officially NOT be on SCD anymore. I don't want to discourage you, but really.... if you do that, it may be that her diet is somewhat better, healthier, than going back to a standard American diet (SAD), but she will not truly be on SCD. Plus, if she is eating illegals foods when she's away from you, every week, then it *could* be said that she really hasn't been 100% SCD this entire time. If there was a way you could start completely over from the beginning, and add foods in the proper order, with no infractions, I'm willing to bet you would see a better outcome. Many kids here have started SCD completely dairy free..... then after some months of healing, have been successfully able to begin using SCD legal GOAT dairy products, even if they'd been CF for years. You do need to begin very slowly.... cautiously, though..... with very small amounts. Patti Need Chips and Dairy Advice Hi everyone... Guest guest
You can make your own chips in a dehydrator. Depending on how far along she is in the diet, you can make zucchini chips by slicing (and peeling, if necessary) zucchini, sprinkle with salt, and dehydrating until crisp (at least 24 hours). You can make red bell pepper chips (also depending on how far along she is) by pureeing red bell peppers in a food processor or blender, adding a little salt, spreading out on a teflex sheet (a solid dehydrator sheet) and drying until crisp. As far as your daughter spending nights away from you, you might want to send her food with her to make sure what she is eating is legal. Need Chips and Dairy Advice Hi everyone... Guest guest
Oh, I also wanted to mention that although a lot of parents give their autistic children dairy yogurt, not all of us do. I, for one, just can't do that. I didn't want you to think that we are all giving that to our children. Need Chips and Dairy Advice Hi everyone... Guest guest
We were not able to add in dairy. Our daughter is not autistic but I wanted to weigh in anyway... it's just not for everyone, that's all. We did successfully do goat yoghurt and cheese for a couple of years but then the enuresis (and something else but I forget what at the moment... I do remember there were two signs) came back and we tied it back in, again to dairy. I'm not saying don't try... because I don't know... I just wanted to say that we tried it and it wasn't helpful.
