Can goat yogurt aggravate congestion?

My two boys are very congested right now. I know dairy products help to

contribute to mucous and aggravate congestion. Would goat yogurt also cause

problems? Should we stay off of it and just use acidophilus capsules until

their congestion has cleared up?

Thanks,

I would think yogurt might be less likely to contribute to congestion, but you

might want to take a break from it until they're all cleared up.

Dana,

It could. If I am without yogurt for a day or two, when I first have it I feel

sniifly and my

nose feels blocked. I sometimes get a swollem waistline and a slight headache,

but rarely a

stronger reaction. I love the taste, need the calcium and good " bugs " so have

not wanted

to be dairy free. Once I reintroduce it, tolerance builds again. Also, the taste

and texture of

the yogurt is so very delicious.

carol,

once your tolerance builds up, does your nose feel completely

unblocked? i have the same problem and want to keep dairy in my diet

eventually, but i wasn't sure if building tolerance would mean i'd

have to live with nasal congestion again.

Silvia,

It comes and goes. Right now I have a sinus cold that has hung on for nearly a

month ad

my nose is generally stuffed. But I sometimes get a rash too from the yogurt and

then

there are times when I'm good with yogurt for a stretch. It seems to depend on

the state of

my immune system. I can not see giving up yogurt. I feel it has great benefit,

However, I'm

tempted to skip it for one week to see if there is a noticeable difference.

Guess this is not

very helpful but it is like being on the deck of a ship that is listing. You

have to roll with

the waves.

Dear List:

Dairy in general can cause and increase in mucous secretions. Haven't research

it but my doc told me this once for my girls and I have notice it myself. It

seems if I just keep it down to less than a cup a day I am fine. When I am

having problems with my sinuses, I stay away from it completely until I am

better. Have you ever used a sinus cup? It is wonderful. They also call it a

netty pot or narial cup. It is an old fashion way of cleansing the nasal

passages at the back of the nose. It has helped me get completely off my

prescription meds for allergies. It also helps get passed sinus infections

because it helps get rid of thick mucous out of your nose you can't blow out. I

do it at least once a day without fail. Eileen Brown

Becky,

I bought a neti pot at my local Wild Oats, but I know you can also find them

online. Just do a search for " neti pot " .

When I do nasal irrigation with my daughter (age 10, very delayed) I don't use

the neti, though.... I use a regular bulb syringe and just flush with gentle

pressure. I use the neti for myself.... but Katera won't hold still long

enough, so I use the bulb syringe and try to make it quick, repeating if

necessary.

The solution you use is just salt water. One quarter teaspoon of plain kosher

salt (don't use iodized salt or sea salt for nasal irrigation) mixed with one

cup of filtered water or bottled spring water. If you want to mix up more....

it's one teaspoon salt to one quart of water. I make it by the quart and keep it

in the fridge, then warm a little in the microwave in a Pyrex container as

needed. You want it to be just slightly warmer than body temp.... like 100

degrees F.

I do this while she is in the tub.... sitting upright. I tilt her head to the

side just a bit, flush one bulb full of solution in the top nostril.... and it

runs out the other nostril (mostly). Little ones may have a harder time not

swallowing or inhaling as you're doing this.... Katera choked a tiny bit the

first few times we did this, but she is used to it now and doesn't breathe in.

You can lay them down on their side to do it, too.... over a folded towell. In

the top nostril.... and it comes out the bottom one. Flip them over to do the

other nostril. I then use the bulb syringe to suction whatever excess mucous is

coming out.

Where do you get this device? is it something you could do with a limited

language 3 year old?
