Guest guest
Ughhhhhh! We seem to be having one problem after another! We started the diet to try and eliminate my son's acid reflux. It has gotten better for sure, but he still is wanting alka-seltzer and rolaids, which I'm sure probably aren't legal. Since beginning the diet, my son has had only loose stools, which I don't understand since he is normally more of a constipated kid. He has been on the SCD for 8 days now. I know he has yeast and most likely problems with the oxalates, but I don't understand why he is having loose stools when he only wants bacon, almond cookies, grape juice and cheese. I really have tried to get vegetables or fruits in him, but it's been a battle. He won't eat green beans, peas, squash pancakes, fried zuchinni,or anything that I've offered him. It's getting pretty frustrating. In fact, all he ate today was four almond cookies. He hasn't ate much in the last 3 days, partly because I think he has pretty bad pain when he has a BM. After he goes, which , like I said is like water, he sits their and says " owh, owh, owh, bottom hurts inside. Is it possible he is plugged up, and all that is coming out is what is getting around the obstruction? Next week we begin his cleanout with Mirilax for four days prior to his scoping. I am concerned about his pain, and then having to get a colonoscopy. Like I said we did this about three years ago for 8 months, and had troubles with constipation, not loose stools. This certainly is not going as planned! Anyone have any ideas as to what could be going on? Patti G.
Guest guest
Always be suspicious if the child is self limiting. I wouldn't give nut flur baked goods only eight days into the diet. Also, the bacon could be causing loose stools due to the fat content. I'm wondering if these foods that he is limiting himself to are feeding the bad gut bugs. Guest guest
I agree with Meleah that something is wrong when a kid is self-limiting so much, even to foods that are supposedly legal. I think that if you're still using the Rolaids, he is probably " wanting " them because of the little bit of sugar or starch that he's getting from them. I don't know which Alka-Seltzer you're using, but some of the flavored ones can certainly contain illegals, too. I don't think you're going to make much headway until you get these out of the picture.... they just undermine any effort you're trying to make with foods. SCD just isn't a diet you can do *almost* all the way. You won't get the desired result. The loose stool *may* be his body detoxing and eliminating junk..... bacterial colonies that have died off, etc.... although I suspect there are still plenty of the bad guys thriving away down there at this point. They can subsist of " just a little " starch and/or sugars. For a beginner, in my opinion, bacon should not be on the menu..... particularly a beginner that is only 8 days in. It may be legal (if you're using one that is completely sugar free), but it's not advisable at this point. Almond flour will tend to loosen the stool in the beginning.... which can be helpful for a constipated kid, but you don't have that issue at present, so I'd opt for pulling this out. I honestly think you're going to have to start over with intro..... remove ALL illegals, meaning the Rolaids and the Alka-Seltzer. Googling " Rolaids Ingredients " brings up the following info: << Non-medicinal ingredients (alphabetically): Corn starch, dextrose, flavour, magnesium stearate, polyethylene glycol, sucrose. >> Corn starch, dextrose and sucrose. Favorite survival foods of gut pathogens. You're just feeding THEM every time you give him one..... sorry to tell ya. And even the most seemingly benign " plain " Alka Seltzer Gold, which contains no aspirin or cold meds, and is often used just for tummy complaints, contains mannitol, an illegal sweetener. As far as him refusing to eat any of the other recommended beginner foods, you definitely may have a food strike on your hands for a bit. You've got to decide, draw the boundaries and simply not provide these more advanced foods as options. He may strike.... he wouldn't be the first.... but almost every single determined food striker we've seen on this list has eventually shocked his or her parents by finally eating..... foods the parents never thought they would. Prepare to be shocked! For right now, though.... if you're unwilling or unable to stop giving him the illegals, you will surely continue to struggle and wear yourself out due to undermining your own efforts. I know you only have the best of intentions.... but this is the truth. You *should* be able to replace the Alka-Seltzer and Rolaids with the SCD Electrolyte Drink.... or even just a pinch of plain baking soda in his (diluted) juice. Guest guest
Just a note: We made the electrolyte drink and diluted it with some of his Welches juice and water and he took it with no problem. Others had mentioned it tasting gross and this way he took it. Off to the pediatrician's at 2 30 PM PST today. Will update upon our return. Guest guest
------------------------------------------------------------------ Thank you Meleah, and Patti, I think I will have to start over with the diet, because I believe my son is now constipated because I let him have to may foods to fast. I think the reason he is having loose stools, is because that is what is getting around the blockage. I plan to clean him out, try to take away the alka-seltzer and all, and restart the intro diet. Now, It says you can have a scrambled egg right? to make the homemade gelatine, you just follow the instructions on the knox unflavored gelatine,is that correct? Do you use the diluted juice for that? So I should just stick to 2-3 of the foods that are listed correct? Should I be getting the dry cottage cheese and make the yoghart as soon as possible to, or hold off on that? I want to do it right this time. I know he won't starve in a day or two, if he doesn't eat much. I suppose homemade applesauce would be ok in a few days to? Thanks so much for shoving the truth right in my face, sometimes that's what it takes! Guest guest
Yes, make the gelatin with the diluted juice according to the directions on the box of Knox unflavored gelatin. Use either apple cider(must be in the refrigerated section) or legal grape juice like Welch's. He can have any style of eggs on intro...scrambled, boiled, poached. He can have meat either boiled, groiled, or grilled. He can have cooked carrots. Some kids haven't done well with carrots, and so parents have substituted a similar cooked veggie for them like acorn or butternut squash. You don't have to use yogurt or dry curd cottage cheese right away. In fact, many parents don't give any dairy for the first few weeks. You don't have to choose only a couple of foods for the intro diet. Just make sure that you stick to the list of foods that are on either the BTVC or pecanbread web sites. I'm glad to hear that you're going to pull the Rolaids and Alcaselsar. I think that is holding him back. After the intro for a couple of days, then start introducing new foods again...one every two to three days(just like when starting a baby on solids). Check out the " beyond the intro diet " chart under the food preparation section of the pecanbread.com site. Yes, applesauce can be one of the first foods to be introduced, but it must be homemade. Personally, I like alternating between introduction of a fruit and veggie...zucchini one day, applesauce a few days later, green beans a few days later, pearsauce a few days later, and so on...That's not a rule, but I just like to alternate the not so sweet veggies with a sweeter food...something different and to look forward to. I think that you'll be surprised at how he does if you are very careful to stick to it, and make sure that everything is SCD legal and not too soon. Feel free to ask away even if you think you're bothering everyone with all of the questions. Better to be safe than sorry, and we're not bothered at all. Guest guest
Patti G., He can eat any of the foods listed in the book on the Intro diet menu.... the chapter titled " Introducing the Diet " .... a few pages in, where she has listed " Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner " foods. He does not have to eat ALL of those foods. Yes, he can have scrambled eggs. I would not introduce the dairy (dry curd cottage cheese and yogurt) unless he was already eating those foods before.... and tolerating cow dairy just fine. If dairy is questionable, just wait..... and in a few weeks, introduce SCD yogurt made with goat milk, if possible. Intro is only for two days..... then you can progress into other fruits and veggies.... all peeled and cooked. Think EASY TO DIGEST.... as easy as possible. You could be right.... that he is really pretty plugged up.... and the rest is just leaking around that. I trust your Mommy instincts! Cooked apples/applesauce and ripe bananas *can* potentially contribute to constipation, so if that is already and issue, keep that in mind. You might want to go with cooked pears/pearsauce instead. Adding a supplement of magnesium citrate (be sure all ingredients are legal!!!) can help relieve constipation. This takes a real committment, and it sounds like you're up for it. We're here for you.
