Guest guest
Sandy, We've raised many puppies in our lifetime. Cyndi's suggestion of some active play and running with the pup close to bedtime to tire it out was excellent, as was her idea about the warm water bottle. In addition to the warm water bottle wrapped in a towel like Cyndi suggested, you might also put a stuffed animal in with the puppy and a clock that makes an audible ticking sound very close to the crate. This gives the little pup something warm and fuzzy to lay against, and the repeating ticking clock mimics the heart beat that they would hear from their mom. Locate the crate as far away from the rest of the sleeping areas in the house as you can, turn out all the lights, and let the puppy whine and wimper. If you get up every time the puppy cries, and you stay awake with it, he/she'll learn that this behavior (the whining and whimering) brings attention, and before you know it, the dog will be keeping you up all night, every night. It's sort of the same principal you would use to teach an infant to sleep through the night, for the first few nights you may have to let them cry themselves to sleep, if necessary, and then once they learn that the crying won't immediately bring someone running, they sleep the night through. Good luck! With love, hope and prayers, Heidi Heidi H. Griffeth South Carolina Rep.
