SCDophilus on back order - probiotic/yogurt questions

I had ordered some SCDophilus from GI Pro Health, but got an email

this morning saying it is on backorder and they hope to ship by

March 7th or sooner. I just started my son on SCD on Thursday. Is

there another brand of acidophilus that is for sure SCD legal, or

will he be ok to wait for the SCDophilus? I do have some of GI Pro

Health's yogurt starter coming. My son was not entirely CF prior to

starting SCD, but I did notice that when I gave him too much dairy

(he only got organic whole milk, and organic whole milk yogurt) he

would chew his thumbnails until they bled, so then I cut out all

dairy except the yogurt about once a week for the last few weeks

before starting SCD, which he seemed to do better with but still

chews his nails to a lesser degree. Would it be too soon to start

the goat yogurt in this case? I don't want to go back to cow's

yogurt for quite a while now. I had intended to start the probiotic

first, and then start the yogurt after a few weeks but now that the

probiotic won't be coming for a while I'm wondering which way we

should go.

Thanks for any thoughts!

Hi Cathy,

If you do use the goat yogurt, you should use smaller amounts. The SCD

yogurt contains a much higher amount of probiotics than commercial

yogurt; your child might get a die off reaction from the probiotics in

the yogurt.

I think that starting with 1/8 of a teaspoon is fine. Increase if die

off reaction is minimal.

Cathy,

There are a number of brands of acidophilus that may be legal. You might be able

to find one on the shelf at a local health food store. You just need to compare

the list of " other ingredients " on the label to the list of legal/illegal

supplement additives on www.pecanbread.com , under " Supplements " .

Kirkman Labs has one.... their lactobacillus acidophilus, in capsules.
