and ,

We do hear this fairly frequently.... not with all the kids, but it's not

uncommon. I wish I could tell you WHY! We can only speculate.

I have two theories... One is that *some* of the " ravenous hunger " is actually

cravings.... driven by the gut pathogens that desperately want to survive. They

send out signals to the host to " GO GET FOOD " ..... and although they really

need starches and sugars, the host might not be able to discern the difference

and just interprets the message as HUNGER. These kids can seem like bottomless

pits!

My second theory is that the body is recognizing that it is finally able to

access good nutrition..... and can more readily absorb it, so is trying to make

up for lost time. This only makes sense in a kid that has been on SCD a little

longer, though.

I can tell you that it *usually* doesn't last very long. Maybe a few weeks....

maybe a couple of months. Could be longer..... sorry!

To both of you, I would just remind you that a lot of these foods don't contain

many calories. Obviously the meat has more.... but the green beans and things

like that really aren't calorie dense. So, they will need more volume.

Also to both of you, I URGE you to add healthy fats!!! Fats really satisfy

hunger. If your child is okay with dairy, add BUTTER. Or ghee (clarified

butter), if you really want to keep them casein free. If you don't even want to

risk using ghee, try adding coconut oil. Other healthy oils are a great idea...

sunflower oil, grape seed oil. Buy high quality oils from a health food store.

Nut butters are calorie dense and higher in fats.... so will be fairly

satisfying.

.... I am not sure how long your child has been on SCD, but the

tiredness/lethargy sounds typical of die-off.

Buy big HUGE amounts of epsom salts.... you're going to need those baths.

Re: eating too much!

I am anxious to see the responses to this, my son only weighs 24

pounds and he is not terribly far off food-wise. We had one day where

it slowed down to a normal amount and it does seem to slowly be

getting there, but he is still constantly wanting food. He has

definitely acted like he just does not feel well. We went to the park

and he walked around the playground twice. Sat in my lap for a swing,

then went to the car and crawled in his carseat and just sat there for

a good 10 minutes while I talked his sister into leaving.

Yes, I'm thinking he feels both cravings and hunger -- I am not filled up on

meat, veggies, fruits or eggs. I usually eat a starch here and there, just to

slow down my digestion so I am not so hungry throughout the day. It's hard to

find a substitute to create that " full feeling " on this diet. I was always

hungry when I was pregnant (more so than my friends were) & I have had high

levels of h. pylori at that time. Is h. pylori one of the pathogens this diet

addresses?

You know, I wasn't able to try any recipes, as I was never able to leave the

stovetop long enough to look anything up! Today, my husband has the day off and

I have to laugh listening to my husabnd go thru day 2 in the kitchen with him.

He is alternating between handing my husband food to cook and escaping out of

the yard. We need to buy refridgerator locks and a lock for your yard gate.

Have you made the butternut squash fries? I can't think of anything else SCD

that seems more satisfying in terms of those carb cravings.

You can get frig and bifolding door locks from One Step Ahead. They have lots

of other safety stuff as well, so I'd check their web site. We had to buy frig

and bifolding door locks(for our pantry) when we started SCD.

Well, locks are pretty common around this list! I have a lock on my fridge....

and one on the pantry. Just the regular child safety ones are enough to keep my

daughter from rummaging.

The butternut squash fries are a super easy one.....

If you have a baking stone, put the stone in the oven, then preheat to 425. (I

have used 450 with success).

Peel the squash, cut it in half (with a BIG sharp knife) and scoop the seeds

out.

Cut into " fry " sized sticks (1/4 " wide... or so). Put them in a bowl, drizzle a

little olive oil over them and toss.

Spread fries on stone (or parchment-lined baking sheet if you don't have a

stone) in a single layer and bake..... the recipe says " until crisp " . I watch

them through the oven window until they're starting to brown up at the edges. I

think it's about 20 minutes, but everyone's oven is different.

Salt if desired..... and don't worry about leftovers. There won't be any!

If a person overeats on legal foods - -does that end up feeding bugs simply by

the fact that there is always food moving along?

I'll agree with Carol that the bulk cooking is key. For example, when you're

making a whole chicken for your son to devour, make two chickens. Put one away

for tomorrow. I realize that bulk cooking for you will only get you through a

couple of days, but even if you cook double what he will eat, it will give you a

break for the next day. Also, I've decided that right now simple is better for

me. With all that is going on for us, it makes my life easier to do stuff like

hamburgers, baked chicken breasts with lemon, slt, and pepper, ect. I just

don't have much time right now to be making muffins, cookies, ect.

SCD is a wonderful diet but there is no doubt that it is not geared to

convenience

food from stores. It would be wonderful if someone had a reliable store or

website to

supply more ready made foods. However understand the difficulty. I just

checked a line of

jams at Digestive Wellness.com said to be SCD legal and discovered they may

contain a

type of star thistle honey which is unfiltered and illegal. This is typical of

why we are so

wary of store bought food.

We can appreciate your frustration . Even though I have really come to love

the home

cooking I need to do for SCD others may not. Cooking can be fast. Example, the

other

night I made a beef stir fry in less than ten minutes and it was just great. (

OK, maybe a

child has texture issues and would not like my beef stir fry but there are

other quick and

easy things)

We all need a certain mind set to stick to the diet and that is understanding

that there is

work involved and strict compliance required.

You had a lot of questions and concerns while you waited for your book. Am I

right in

feeling you are still not completely " settled " and comfortable with the

commitment it takes

to do this?

We are all here to give you whatever help we can and I believe once you

develop a system

for some bulk cooking and freezing, baking and storing and if using yogurt

making it in

large batches it will not be as challenging. believe me, , everyone is on

your side and

most have gone through feeling fairly frustrated at the start.

But just ask our list how many found it really was worth the struggle.
