Guest guest
Hi Patti, At the moment I am just trying to get ready to start yoghurt. Can anybody assist me with details of suppliers/manufacturers of yoghurt starter culture in South Africa. I also would like to know about all the legal probiotic strains allowed on SCD. Is there a website I can go on perhaps. The goat farm that I would have approached for the goat yoghurt has been sold and I can't seem to get hold of the new owners, to certify the yoghurt only contains milk, or milk solids and cultures. I'm left with cows milk yoghurt by Weleda which says on the label ingredients: Milk, starter culture. But sebastian was very allergic on his tests. Is it possible to start yoghurt with any starter culture? I see on the GI Pro Health website the yoghurt starter strains are Lactobacillus Bulgaricus, Streptococcus thermophilus, Lactobacillus casei. Can you only start yoghurt with these three strains?? At the moment I'm looking for a manufacturer but can't seem to locate anyone..... Any help or advice please!!! Thank you Tina Re: vitamin supplement Adult formulas of any supplement or over the counter medicine are figured according to a 150 lb adult. Just compare your child's weight to that and adjust the quantity/dose accordingly. My own daughter conveniently weighs 76 lbs, which makes it quite easy. As you can imagine, not every adult weighs exactly 150 lbs, so you don't have to be extremely precise. Just approximate. Patti

Guest guest
Tina, The only officially SCD legal probiotic strains are l.acidophilus and s.boulardii. You would just need to find a product (any brand) that had only l.acidophilus (or a combo of that and s.boulardii.... which I doubt you'd find together).... that had zero illegals. Just read the label and make sure no illegal additives are included, especially under " other ingredients " . The list of legal/illegal supplement additives is at www.pecanbread.com under " Supplements " . I know some online stores that sell supplements, including probiotics, do ship internationally. www.iherb.com is one. I don't know for sure about Kirkman Labs or GI ProHealth. Guest guest
Hi Patti, I have been able to locate a manufacturer of probiotic strains. Is there anything I need to watch out for. Would there be anything illegal they could add to the culture. Patti you directed me to the GI Pro Health website amongst others to read about legal probiotic strains. According to SCD only L. Acidophilus and S. Boulardii are legal. What about the probiotic strains contained in the GI Pro Health Yoghurt starter. There are three listed. L Bulgaricus, Stretococcus Thermophilus, and L. Casei are these three also legal??? I finally spoke to the farmer of the goats yoghurt this morning. Is it necessary to find out which strains of bacteria he uses as a starter for his yoghurt. Guest guest
Dear Patti, I have just remebered that sebastian used to take a " live " probiotic . It was a liquid. It is made here in S. Africa and has the following strains: L acidophilus L. Brevis L.Paracasei L. Plantarum L. Rhamnosus I just spoke to the company who distributes it and a lady there told me she knows of a dietitian who makes yoghurt with this. Are these strains legal?? Thanks Tina Re: vitamin supplement Adult formulas of any supplement or over the counter medicine are figured according to a 150 lb adult. Guest guest
Tina, You wrote: << have been able to locate a manufacturer of probiotic strains. Is there anything I need to watch out for. It's the list of legal/illegal supplement additives that you want to copy and compare to the label. <<According to SCD only L. Acidophilus and S. Boulardii are legal. What about the probiotic strains contained in the GI Pro Health Yoghurt starter. There are three listed. L Bulgaricus, Stretococcus Thermophilus, and L. They are present in pretty much all yogurt starter. I am not as familiar with the role l.casei plays..... but I just know that we are only able to use that strain in a starter... not in a supplement. <<I finally spoke to the farmer of the goats yoghurt this morning. Is it necessary to find out which strains of bacteria he uses as a starter for his yoghurt.>> YES, it is necessary. l.acidophilus, s.thermophilus, l.bulgaricus and l.casei are allowed .... any other strains would make this illegal. And, you are only going to use this yogurt as a STARTER.... right? I assume so.... just wanted to be sure. Patti
Guest guest
Tina, I'm sorry.... no they're not. The only one that is legal in this mixture is the l.acidophilus.
