Allan, Foods that are strictly forbidden for beginners Lentils, beans, dried fruits, seeds, cashews and peanut butter are very advanced foods. These should only be introduced three months after the gut has significantly healed and digestive symptoms have disappeared. Lentils are usually harder to digest than earlier foods as found on The Stages on the SCD Food link of our website.. I think it is not a good idea to use them daily. Carol F. Guest guest
Do you mean that 80% of his meals are made up of lentils? It seems like that is a little out of balance, if so. How do you think he's doing on them? Does he seems to be digesting them well? Patti Lentils and others from the Legumes family Hi group ! Is there a problem if one uses to much Lentils and others from the Legumes family in the daily intake of otherwise legal SCD foods (and yes, they are prepared the way Elaine has described it) ? My son(9,5 years old w/ Epilepsy/ SCD for 1 year now/ great results up til now) gets almost 80 % of his energy from this group of food to day and I wonder if this is something that could be improved on. I mean is this kind of food something that require more work on the intestine to get it digested than eg. vegetables and therefore maybe puts more stress om this ongoing healingprocess than necessary... ? Guest guest
We are not beginners and have been on SCD for 1 year now with our son ! - and the reason for us using more and more from the legumes family now is that it is a little difficult to get enough energy out of the standard vegetables etc. for a kid that is growing really fast now ! He really needs some high packed energy from his food in order to keep his seizures down to a minimum also ! So this is our dilemma ( He needs @ 2000 Kcal per. day to keep up his activity and to hold the seizures down at the same time. We are also GF/CF. Carol, you are saying that: .... " these should only be introduced three months after the gut has significantly healed and digestive symptoms have disappeared " We have not used any of these in the beginning, but how will you in fact know this for sure - in an autistic and epileptic boy - that the " digestive symptoms have disappeared " ? You can not ever be so sure - that you can say this when the symptoms in this regard is more neurological and psychological, and not so much physical like in your case having celiac ! It is really difficult when you are dealing with neorological noise affecting the overall behaviour in a child.
