Guest guest
I strongly recommend that you use the Electrolyte Drink recipe on Elaine's website at this point. Go to www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info and click on the " Knowledge Base " . It's under " E " . This should help her feel a bit better.... just small sips. Also, keep the chicken broth cooking.... and keep giving her small amounts of that throughout the day. Was she eating dairy products prior to going on SCD? Do you think she had any sensitivity or allergy? If not, beginning SCD yogurt fairly soon is fine..... in fact, it is included in one of the Intro Diet recipes (the cheesecake). We usually suggest starting with yogurt made from goat milk around here, because so many of the kids with autism were off all cow dairy prior to SCD..... but if cow milk products are not a problem, you can make it with that. My daughter eats cow milk yogurt. Keep us posted as to how she's feeling. Patti Looking for help/support getting through intro diet Hello all, this is my 1st entry. My 9 year old daughter, a, has been diagnosed with small-bowel bacterial overgrowth. Endoscopy and colonoscopy have shown that she does not have ulcerative colitis, crohns, or celiac disease. She also does not have autism. However, she has been suffering from extreme bloating/gas/soft stools/diarrhea/weight loss for the past 6 months. 4 rounds of antibiotics have had no effect. Her doctors do not think her diet has anything to do with it. I disagree. Desperately searching the internet this weekend I came across the SCD diet. We started her on the intro diet yesterday. She is having a severe reaction - lots of cramping and a return of her diarrhea (before this she only had cramping sporadically, but now it's been almost continuous since she started the diet). Can anyone tell me how long this discomfort usually lasts? Also, I'm confused about when to start the homemade yogurt. Any suggestions? I want to stick with the diet because my gut tells me it will help, but it's hard when she looks so miserable... Thank you. GG
Guest guest
What she is experiencing now is very common. It is the die off of the bad bacteria in his intestines that is causing the diharea. Stick with the intro diet up to fie days but no more. Even if her diharea persists after five days, you need to start introducing foods slowly. Start with all cooked, pealed, seeded fruits and veggies. There is a chart on pecanbread.com that you can use as a guide. It is not set in stone, but gives you an idea of which foods are easiest to digest. Introduce foods one at a time allowing a few days in between to watch her reaction. Keep a food journal with what she eats each day, how it was prepared, and how she reacted to eat. Ask any questions if you are uncertain. We are here to help. You can actually begin introducing the yogurt right away. Make sure to ferment it for 24 hours. Meleah Looking for help/support getting through intro diet Hello all, this is my 1st entry. Guest guest
Hi GG, I believe that starting the SCD will help your daughter tremendously. My son has been SCD for 3 months and is doing better than ever. He has gained 3 lbs in that time and his stools are finally starting to normalize. We had 10 days of VERY BAD die-off at first. And then redid the intro diet and had EXTREME die-off for 3 more days. It was one of the hardest things that my husband and I have been through, but worth it. To me the diet is very easy to cook and my son is eating healthier than ever. It is definitely tricky at first to know what to give your child, but there is a lot of help on this site. My son's die-off included: being tired, seemed drunk sometimes, light sensitivity, crying, tummy aches, night waking, occasional blow diarrhea, speech got worse, but these things were all temporary. Stick with it. It will be well worth the effort. Good luck! Tricia, mom to Aidan (ASD to some recovering to others), SCD 3 mths+ > > Hello all, this is my 1st entry. Guest guest
Thank you so much for the reassuring words - she seems a little better today (day 3 of intro diet) I have some yogurt fermenting now, it will be ready this evening and I plan to give it to her then.
