Guest guest
We started the SCD diet 7 days ago for my 7 year old daughter. She has LC (Lymphocytic Colitis). We only lasted about 1 1/2 days on the intro basically because She got really tired of eating the same foods. She hated the chicken soup because of the carrots. We advanced on and now I'm thinking that I have added way to many foods to soon. She is eating the following when she eats she is protesting the diet by not eating at all. Reason why I had more foods quickly to find something she would eat. boiled/baked chicken hamburger pattie baked/grilled beef green beans cooked well applesauce pearsauce baked apples and pear banana grilled pineapple egg cheese jello jigglers made with juice welches juice 1/2 water. The only cheating was done on easter when she got ahold of some illegal foods with out me knowing. First day on the diet she had no bowel movement for 2 days she went once a day watery Diaherria easter 4 water D (thought it might have been die off very dark colored water) now we are going 2 times a day but still watery D. I reread book and realize now that egg and fruits should not be used until D is gone, but I don't know what I will feed her if I take those out. I have ordered a yogurt maker it should be here by the end of the week. I quess my question is should I start over with the intro or just continue? If I stick to legal foods will I adventally see improvement? The difficulty is that she does not feel or act sick. She just has the watery D. Here GI has her on Culturelle probiotic but doesn't feel diet has much to do with her LC. we are trying the diet on our own. She has always had the watery D so to her it is normal and she doesn't believe she sick so should not have to follow the diet. Any advice would be great. We've only been doing this diet for 7 days and I already feel like it has been years. Thanks Carla
Guest guest
Carla, I know how difficult it is to do SCD with a daughter who fights the diet. I really feel for you. Here is an alternative intro diet since your daughter does not want the chicken soup. http://www.pecanbread.com/new/scdfoods1.html#intro You might be having problems due to the following reasons: The infraction might be sabotaging your daughter's success. You must do everything you can to prevent her from getting illegal food. The probiotic that you are using, Culturelle, is not SCD legal. Please use the ones in the probiotic section of our website. I really recommend S Boulardii and Accidophilus. Is the banana ripe? The pineapple might be too advanced. I do recommend starting out with the intro diet if you possibly can. I think that you will see great results when you make the yogurt! Mimi > We started the SCD diet 7 days ago for my 7 year old daughter. She > has LC (Lymphocytic Colitis). Guest guest
Thanks Mimi, I have been debating on taking her off of the Culturelle, as I don't believe it is helping anymore. But worried of what the DR. will say, as he doesn't agree with the diet having any effect on her. I have made more of the chicken soup leaving out the carrots, hopefully my daughter will eat it this time. I also wondered if I was pushing it with the pineapple. Should I be concerned about the egg since she is still having some diaherria?? Egg is the one thing she will eat. I'm hoping also that the yogurt will help alot. The problem will be getting her to eat it. Any tricks for that you can share??? Thanks, Carla > > Carla, > > > I know how difficult it is to do SCD with a daughter who fights the > diet. Guest guest
Hi Carla, > boiled/baked chicken > hamburger pattie > baked/grilled beef These foods are probably fine. > green beans cooked well Some have trouble with green beans no matter how well they are cooked. I continue to have issue with them - even the french cut green beans. > applesauce > pearsauce These may be okay as long as they are homemade and cooked until tender before pureeing into sauce. > baked apples and pear If she is still having watery diarrhea these may be making it worse. You shopuld probably wait until you see some improvement. > banana Is it yellow with lots of brown spots? > grilled pineapple Definitely wait on pineapple if she still has diarrhea. It is quite fibrous even when cooked. > egg If the above changes don't firm up the stool remove the eggs to see if that is a problem. It is for some people. Usually this would be something you can determine with the intro diet but if you can't stay on it long enough to determine how she tolerates eggs, carots and other intro (or safe) foods you'll have to improvise to determine tolerance. > cheese Which cheeses is she eating? > jello jigglers made with juice What juice? > welches juice 1/2 water. << The only cheating was done on easter when she got ahold of some > illegal foods with out me knowing. > > First day on the diet she had no bowel movement > for 2 days she went once a day watery Diaherria > easter 4 water D (thought it might have been die off very dark > colored water) > now we are going 2 times a day but still watery D. > > I reread book and realize now that egg and fruits should not be used > until D is gone, but I don't know what I will feed her if I take > those out. >> Good vegetable choices for early in the diet: winter squash (buttercup, butternut, acorn, kobacha etc..) boiled or steamed until soft; peeled well cooked zucchini, maybe some wekll cooked french cut green beans. After these ripe avocado, the tips of well cooked asparagus, cooked spinach (when stools firm up). << I have ordered a yogurt maker it should be here by the end of the > week. > I quess my question is should I start over with the intro or just > continue? If you stick to just legal foods you may see progress eventually - it may just take some time. << The difficulty is that she does not feel or act sick. She just has > the watery D. Guest guest
Thanks Sheila, I have taken the pineapple out of her diet and the baked apples and pears. the cheese is block mild cheddar and farmers cheese. I also stopped her Culturelle, I think my main problem is the times she is sneaking foods. I found out last night that she eat a cupcake while at a church function!!!! She is hardly eating anything that I give her. I tried making the chicken soup again. Only using the chicken and carrots while cooking and then removed the carrots as she hates them. so basically it was only chicken in the broth. She would not eat it still. I think she feels that if she refuses to eat that I will give in and give her back the normal foods she was eating. She is getting very tired of the limited number of foods that I'm offering. Her stool was kind of soft this morning, not water but not formed either. Thanks for the encouragement. I'm hoping that if I can just keep her eating the legal foods that we will see some improvement. We are dealing with only the Lymphocytic Colitis. And it has already improved somewhat with the Culturelle. I really feel this diet is the answer for us if i could just convince her of that, I think we would see improvement. Thans again. Guest guest
Hi Carla, << the cheese is block mild cheddar and farmers cheese. >> The farmers cheese: Is it the kind like dry curd cottage cheese (which is legal) or solid like cheddar cheese. The solid farmers cheese is not SCD legal; too much lactose. Sheila, SCD Feb. 2001, UC 23 yrs mom of emily and daniel
Guest guest
So what cheeses are legal. I'm looking for a cheese to chunk up for snacks and lunch box. My daughter loves the farmers cheese but it is in block form. I quess I thought it would be legal since it has the same ingredients as the DCCC and looked similar just in a block form. She doesn't like the DCCC. How do you learn what is legal and not. I have read the book twice, and printed the legal/illegal food list from the webesite. But it seems like I keep getting illegal foods. Also I wonder how you have learned when to enter the different foods, the book doesn't really give to much information on introducing things. I have read the pecan website and got the info there. But just curious as to how everyone learnt this? Is it just trail and error. I fear we will never make any progress because I keep messing up on the legal and illegal foods. Thanks. >
Guest guest
Hi Carla, << So what cheeses are legal. I'm looking for a cheese to chunk up for snacks and lunch box. My daughter loves the farmers cheese but it is in block form. >> There is a list of legal cheeses in the back of BTVC; the Appendix (page 180 in the 10th edition). The best cheeses to start with are bolded in Italics. Cheeses like Cheddar, Swiss, Brick etc (mild, medium or marble) are good to start with. The mild cheddar is a good choice if your daughter doesn't like strong flavours and it can be chunked up for school snacks. << I quess I thought it would be legal since it has the > same ingredients as the DCCC and looked similar just in a block form. >> The hard block of farmers cheese hasn't been aged sufficiently to break down lactose. The farmers cheese that is similar to DCCC is legal. Unfortunately they have both the same name although they are very different cheeses. << She doesn't like the DCCC. How do you learn what is legal and not. I have read the book twice, and printed the legal/illegal food list from the webesite. But it seems like I keep getting illegal foods. >> That's the great thing about the online lists - we can help you weed out any illegals you may have missed. I made *lots* of mistakes when I started the diet. The SCDers at the Long island list were very helpful to me. Now, there is also all the great info on the SCD websites. Some additional info that isn't in the book has been added to http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info/legal/legal_illegal_a-c.htm << Also I wonder how you have learned when to enter the different foods, the > book doesn't really give to much information on introducing things. I > have read the pecan website and got the info there. But just curious > as to how everyone learnt this? >> In general, After the intro you should slowly try adding in cooked and peeled (deseeded in necessary) vegetables and fruits. If ready to try nuts nut butters or nut flours are easiest to tolerate and pecans and blanched almonds are the easiest to digest nuts. There is a guideline at http://pecanbread.com/new/scdfoods1.html#beyond that may help you in knowing which are the best foods to try next.
