Guest guest
All over the usa, even if a child is in private school, the testing is FREE at the local public school, unless you choose your own private neuro- psychologist! Guest guest
Hi Tina, Definately schedule a meeting with the school counselor. He maybe expressing some intense feelings of hopelessness. He needs to know someone at that school is on his side. Maybe a meeting with the teachers, counselor and parents would work. If not, see if your cf clinic recommends anyone that works with special needs kids. Sometimes these kids feel like they are they are trapped in these bodies that are like prisons and their is no escape. A trained counselor in this area could do wonders. I hope this situations improves. I will keep you in my thoughts. Sara > Good afternoon to all, hope everyone is feeling well, if not I hope you get > to doing so very quickly. Guest guest
Hi Tina, Your public school system should test him for free. If he attends private school your school district should still pay for the testing. My sister is a reading specialist and administers tests to kids throughout the day to see if they are " gifted " or " learning disabled " They don't charge the parents for the tests. I wouldn't wait because sometimes it takes a long time before they can actually schedule the child to be tested once the decision is made. Even if they fail Christian or hold him back the year, it would be beneficial to know if it is because of a disability. I would also take the CF doc's advice about counseling because of the late dx. This may be impacting him more than he lets on........... Question about cf and learning disabilities Good afternoon to all, hope everyone is feeling well, if not I hope you get to doing so very quickly. Shana and Kurt you guys hang in there and keep us up to date with how Miss Shana is doing. We will continue to keep you in our prayers. I have asked before about your children with cf having difficult times at school; we have been fighting with the public school system here since Christian was diagnosed. Seems the school is trying to say that he has learning disabilities and needs to be tested ... no it couldn't possibly be the teachers. I just got off the phone with the lady that schedules these test; if we go through the school system we pay $1200.00 if we use our insurance we pay $575.00. These people have been dragging their feet since the beginning of the school year; they don't even have his 504 plan in place yet and I am up at the school almost every week. I am just going nuts; Christian was diagnosed in October with ADHD and put on medicine ... I don't see a difference. Now we have already started the last 9 week period and he is failing. We have gotten him tutoring and special help and it doesn't seem to help. I feel that he sees what buttons to push and that's what he does ... the teachers act afraid of him so whenever he farts they call me to come get him; and he knows it. Now his pulmonoligist suggested getting him counseling because of his late diagnoses. I know that he could be doing this all because he has told me that there isn't any reason for him to continue in school; he just isn't interested. We have taken away all his video games and limited his activities; he does the work but never turns it in. I'm sorry I don't mean to ramble I just am at a loss for what to do. The mother part of me doesn't want him having to repeat the 6th grade but if he isn't willing to turn in his work what else can they do? Has anyone had their child tested for learning disabilities and if so what was the out come. My husband says we should just wait until school is out to have him tested since he will most likely fail this year. On a good note we had another checkup today; still 90 pound but now he is 60 " two more inches and he will be as tall as I am ... good thing that Dad is 6' 3 " ! He also had blood drawn for his mutations; don't know what they will show but I do feel that the more people tested the better. Thank you for listening to my ramblings any and all suggestions are truly welcome. Tina Mom to Christian 12 yowcf
Guest guest
Hi Tina, a was also diagnosed a little older. But I believe with your son, he is also going into a weird stage, pre-teen years and teen years are not too much fun for some kids. I remember I could not understand my mom, I was way too young to do somethings but yet I had to be an adult and act like one for other things. a went through a spell a few weeks ago that I thought I was going to have her tested but she kind got out of it. We did get a tutor and the change has been remarkable, I guess she just need it a little help. Also, boys are a lot slower to mature, my Venanzio 7 years old nocf, he had to repeat kindergarten, he was not interested at all. It was not until he went to 1st grade, this year, that he finally got in the mood. He is a summer baby so one of the youngest on his first go around. a is also a summer baby and did not have any problems with kindergarten, she loved it. May be it is a good idea that he goes back to the same grade next year, he might be a little more mature. With the problems you are having at his school, isn't a federal law that once the issue of a learning dissability has been raised, the school has to test that child w/in a certain time? I am not sure but I believe I read that somewhere. Well, I wish you best luck, mom of a 10 wcf, Venanzio 7 nocf, Pepe 4 nocf > Good afternoon to all, hope everyone is feeling well, if not I hope you get > to doing so very quickly.
