Plex sure lists lots of ingredients even though it states it is free of things

that would raise

a red flag. Plex is not on the Pecanbread legal supplement list. Is it a GFCF

thing ?

tricia, there are two things in your list that jump out at me,

although i'm at about the same stage as you on SCD (and hence a

beginner)- my daughter does not tolerate any amount of honey at all

(even filtered, cooked honey), and also when i make things into

pancakes, it is too much grease for her. if she eats honey, she gets

very loose stools. if she eats pancakes, her eczema flares up and she

gets itchy. just something to think about.

Hi Tricia,

<<My son has been SCD for 65 days now and his stools come every other

day and are still mushy. Sometimes it is two days between movements.

Never a hard stool. Is this normal? Lately he has been getting

changed at school or daycare so I haven't even seen one since last

weekend, but school said the last one was better than mash potatos,

but not formed.>>

We talked a little about how, for Aidan, going further between BMs *could* be

related to his hypotonia. Since the consistancy of his stool doesn't seem to

indicate he's constipated, I think that sure plays in. " Better than mashed

potatoes " is a slight improvement! We have to admit that, right? " )

<<We've removed carrots, bananas and yesterday he had his last apples

for a while until I see if they are slowing him down. (We cook and

deseed everything.) >>

You note to me in the mail was sent Feb. 20th.... and you said you had removed

carrots that day.... so I would have expected that to have made a difference by

now. If you bring them back in, I just wouldn't suggest you go back to the fried

carrot curls, but go with boiled or steamed carrots instead. You can hold them

out for a while longer, though... just to see.

I would think that bananas and cooked apples would help firm up the stool... not

make it looser.... but of course, everyone is different.

<<He is currently eating chicken pancakes, beef pancakes, eggs, " cold

filtered " honey, zucchini, butternut squash, pears and over the last

week>>

I'm not sure what " cold filtered " honey means. You may want to try a different

brand.... and just make sure it's clear and filtered. Or even hold honey out

for just a wee bit and see what happens (three or four days?). You could use

pearsauce to sweeten things instead.

<<I've introduced ripe avacados and then macadamia nut butter and

have not noticed any bad reactions with introduction of these two

things.>>

Oh, good! So, you don't think his stool is any softer/looser on these foods? I

like the idea of all the good calories he's getting in these foods!

<<I'm wondering if something is holding him back. We had 4 formed

stools in the first 24 days and none since. Could it be the ASD Plex

he is on? The Pentasa? Too much SCDophlis (3 caps a day)? Or does it

just take more time in some kiddos?>>

I would really like to see how he would do without the ASD Plex... just for a

week or so, if that's possible. I'll take " just for the weekend " if I have to.

:) It's just... you know how I feel about all that calcium! And, to be

honest, even totally wonderful mulitple formulas with no illegals..... I just

feel that some of the kids get off to a better start on the diet without any

supps. I don't know why it's true, but I've seen it time and time again.

It also *could* be the Pentasa. Didn't we find out that there is *some* illegal

in it? How much longer does the doc want him on that? Indefinitely? Gee I'd

like to see how the diet could work it's magic without that. I know, I know....

you keep it in if the doctor insists. That's okay.... I understand the

reasoning.

There are 3 billion cfr's of acidophilus in EACH capsule of SCDophilus..... so

yeah, you really should start with 3 billion per day (divided into two doses)

and work UP to 9 billion, gradually.... according to Elaine.

Let me know if you want to talk again.

Patti and everyone,

There's been a new developement. Yesterday we did have a " blow-out "

poop on the play ground at daycare. And I had feed Aidan quite a bit of

Macadamia brownies the two days before. (with increased honey.)So the

nut butter or honey could be a problem.

Patti he usually poops on the play ground so hypotonia could have

something to do with it.

I think we should stay away from bananas until we get his stools in

better shape consistantly. I'm confussed about removing apples, if they

help to firm up stools. Plus I think the first step is to remove honey

for a week and see what happens so I don't want to do both at the same

time. He's only been off apples since yesterday. So maybe I should add

them back in???

We've been back on Pentasa for 27 days with no apparent benefit, so

I'll email the doc and say we want to stop it and see what he says. I

would also like to see the diet work on its own.

I also will back down on the SCDophlis. Before going SCD Aidan used to

get mega doses of probiotics, so I never thought 9 billion a day was

that much.

So let me know if this sounds like a plan. I would love to hear any and

everyones comments.

1. Remove honey for a 5-7 days. I'll make the brownies with pear sauce

so that I don't remove the nut butter at the same time. (???)

2. Remove the pentasa after talking to the doc.

3. Back off on the SCDophlis, after the 5-7 days.

I totally understand how you feel about the calcium and definity am

taking that into consideration, but we'll keep the ASD Plex for now. If

we try everything else with no success, I'll remove it and see what

happens. When we first started the diet Aidan was off supplements for

at least two weeks because he was feeling so bad it was just too hard

to force him to take them. So he kinda of did get a break from them for

a little bit.

Tricia,

Okay.... First thing that occurs to me here is to remind you that with every

new food you introduce, you probably should give him just a small amount....

then wait a good 24 to 48 hrs, to see what the fallout will be, if any.

In this case, it's hard to know what's what, because you've removed some things,

while adding another. So, I honestly don't know about putting the apples back.

It certainly wouldn't be the first time someone reported looser poo as a result

of cooked apples..... but the majority of the time, when they're cooked, they

tend to be " binding " .... and raw apples tend to do the opposite. It's just hard

to tell.... because you brought in macadamia butter in the brownies at about the

same time, and used " quite a bit " . Not sure how much " quite a bit " is... but,

probably for Aidan, we need to test just a small portion and give his body a

little longer to respond.

Interesting that excercize helps him go.... really common in low-tone kids.

For that reason, I think belly massages would probably help, too..... or

helping him do " bicycles " while laying on his back. We used to do that a lot

with Katera.... kind of gently pressing each thigh against her lower belly as

we alternated the legs in bicycling motion.

I'll be anxious to hear what the doctor says about the Pentasa trial. My

fingers are crossed that you can stop that one.

Yes.... good plan to back down the SCDophilus.

Everything else sounds fine.... just don't worry about the bananas and apples.

Leave them out for now so we don't make too many changes at once.

OK. I find that little comment interesting about low muscle tone people usually

having their BMs during exercise. I figured this was common with most people.

iel used to always go when being active. It isn't quite so common for

that to be when he goes, but still does happen that way frequently. He goes

every day though. Maybe his muscle tone is improving with the OT that we're

doing even though I really don't feel like I've seen much of any fruit from it

yet.
