Guest guest
Kristie, I do not think that black tarry stool is a normal thing at this point. We might see that very briefly in a kid, just at the very beginning of starting SCD..... as there are a lot of changes going on in their digestive tract..... so we hear reports of all kinds of crazy colors. But this should not go on very long at all. Here is what I just copied after a Google search: <<A black stool usually means that the blood is coming from the upper part of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. This includes the esophagus, stomach, and the first part of the small intestine. Blood will typically look like tar after it has been exposed to the body's digestive juices. Stomach ulcers caused by ibuprofen, naproxen, or aspirin are common causes of upper GI bleeding. >> If bleeding is what's going on for your son, the Advil was definitely not a good thing....because the drug itself could trigger more bleeding, but if you gave the kid version of the Advil with sugar in it, that could have set you back in terms of making progress on SCD, too. I honestly think you need to find out if in fact there is some bleeding going on, and that's just something that's beyond our ability to confirm for you. I just don't think this is within the realm of what we typically see for a kid in the third week of SCD. Food-wise, I am uncomfortable with the " Italian seasoning " and " Herbs de provence " you're using. Spice or herb blends are not advisable.... possibly illegal. You want to use just plain oregano, basil, etc. The individual herbs. Purchase them separately.... not in pre-mixed blends. For a kid who is this new to the diet, and having this much trouble, I would NOT use herbs AT ALL..... unless I just put them in the cooking pot tied up in cheesecloth bundles.... and could pull them out and throw them away before serving... if he simply won't eat anything without those particular flavors. I would suggest something like whole sprigs of fresh rosemary, stuffed inside a chicken before you roast it.... that you toss out, and don't eat. Also.... I would avoid frying any of his food at this point. Boiling, slow-cooking in a crock pot, poaching, broiling or baking are preferred methods for meats at this point...... and boiling, steaming, baking or slow-cooking for veggies and fruits, too. Is zucchini truly the only vegetable he has currently been eating up to this point? Patti Still watery stool like black tar continues Hi all! We still have our guy going on SCD and he has black tar watery stool (lovely). So bad that last night in his sleep he went and it went through his clothes and onto the sheets. We had to wake him up and change him and give him a bath and change sheets and such. What we are feeding him: oil we use: coconut to cook with made by Spectrum. He eats chicken pancakes, hamburger patties, baked zucchini (peeled and deseeded yes), applesauce homemade, banana, chicken patty, eggs Herbs used by Spice Hunter: Italian seasoning and Herbs de provence. Also sea salt and pepper. Drinks: white or dark grape juice by Welches only watered down with Arrowhead Water! We did make the lemonade but that day was a very bad stool so my mom suggested holding off on that for a bit. We are to introduce a new vegetable today. This is week three of SCD and I would say his stool has stayed pretty consistently bad. He also got sick two days ago with a cold, fever, and not feeling good. I gave him Advil for Children but this is probably wrong and not legal. Sorry I didn't know what to do. Kristie Aidan 3.
Guest guest
Okay so who would I go too to figure this out..if there is bleeding and such within his gut? We started carrots yesturday. I am starting a new fruit and vegetable three days apart so we are on vegetable number two now. I contacted Spice Hunter and their organic herbs have NOTHING added to them and no pesticides no starches just the herb itself. I will consider eliminating this but I am not certain that is the problem. I realize Advil (Children's liquid) is illegal but he is obviously in pain and his back molars are coming in now too. Hope you guys can help. Thanks Patti for addressing this. Kristie Kristie > > Kristie, > > I do not think that black tarry stool is a normal thing at this point. Guest guest
I'm wondering if you need to schedule an appointment with a pediatric GI doc or just your regular ped or DAN doc to discuss what might need to be checked on. Guest guest
I can't imagine SCD causing bleeding.... but this really is not okay, and is highly unusual. Your pediatrician would know what next step to take.... of course, he/she might think SCD was a crazy diet to put your child on, so if you have a doctor who supports the diet, I would turn there first. It might be something like a stomach ulcer.... or??? They may need to look down there with a scope or something. I'm sure there will be stool tests that need to be done, etc. How is your child FEELING?? Energy-wise? Weight? Other symptoms? Guest guest
Patti This is a difficult question because he has had the cold issues and molar coming in issue since Tuesday or Monday evening of this week. He has had a runny nose, been more moody and even crying at night when we put him in his room (highly unsual for him). Last night we put him down at 8 PM. He cried and screamed and after about 30 minutes we went back in and discovered he had a bowel movement that had went through his diaper just barely (the black liquid tar stool). We cleaned him up and put him back down. Still crying 20 minutes in we went in and discovered he had urinated and it went through these clothes. Cleaned up put back down and he cried like in pain. We gave the Children's Advil and after another 20 minutes the crying went down to whimpers and then sleep. All of that highly unusual for him. Earlier on in the week the stool came out in his sleep and went on bed and sheets. We had to wake him up and give him a bath, clean everything and that was not easy. He has just been more moody and a bit more lethargic yes. Definitely he had a distended belly prior to SCD and it is coming down quite a bit. I haven't weighed him so I don't know his weight but I would say now less than 47 pounds which is where he was pre SCD (at age 3.7...always been off the charts for weight since two weeks after birth). I did call a GI hotline through a local hospital and a GI got back to me and let me know if I felt he was lethargic to an extreme I should go to the ER. She said if not go see a regular pediatrician for stool sample first. I also emailed our DAN physician out here and hopefully will hear from her too. I utilize www.tacanow.com resource list and hopefully the pediatrician on there won't feel the SCD diet is crazy because I KNOW what I am feeding him is healthy and definitely much better than his diet prior to SCD of rice milk, French Fries, rice noodles and potatoe chips. When I know more I will get back to you all. Thanks for suggestions thus far. Kristie > > I can't imagine SCD causing bleeding.... but this really is not okay, and is highly unusual. Guest guest
Some of these kids are having a hard time with the carrots. I know my dd used to at the beginning. I wouldn't do the fruits at all. Just the veggies and maybe a little fruit juice just to get the carbs. Is he taking any magnesium? That will help a bit. I recommend the magnesium taurate. My dd takes it. It will help things move out a little faster so you won't see the black tarry stool. For my dd, the black, tarry stools were too much protein, Constipation, ammonia due to all the protein and the goat yogurt helped with the C as well. The black could be occult blood but, if it comes out neg. tomarrow, I would put him through an all-natural parasite cleanse. This was step #1 for us after the diet. I had K on SCD for over 6 months before her scopes. She was nutritionally sound at that point but, still had those black stools now & then. And the stench! You can use some clove oil in a carrier to put on your finger and numb the area where the tooth is coming in. Also, if the symptoms match, Belladona will also help with tooth pain. It is a homeopathic remedy avail. at the health food store probably. This is where I got ours when we need it. If that doesn't work, Advil may be necessary. I use it as a last resort now. Also, no antibiotics! These kids GI's suffer terribly over those things and they don't always work. Balancing meat, veggies, fruit juice(mixed with water half and half) & fats is very important in every meal. Have you done enzymes with him? I would hold off on those for the time being. You could try pumpkin for his next veggie. This will help with parasites if there is any. Most of our ASD kids have bacteria, worms & /or yeast problems. Maybe it would also help if you were a member of other all-natural care boards also. Is he feverish? How many times does he go a day? I hope you have a good night tonight and get some real help tomarrow. Poor baby. Jenn L Still watery stool like black tar continues > > > > > > Hi all! Guest guest
Jenn, I agree with your statement about the carrots.... that's true. But, I not comfortable with just generally recommending that parents should not use fruits at all. This is not something we usually suggest when counseling SCD families. It's true that *some* have had to cut back a bit on fruits and honey, IF they have a huge problem with yeast... but we don't really tell anyone " don't do fruit " across the board. In most cases, cooked fruits are an excellent food for beginners.... many are well tolerated. thanks, Patti Re: Re: Still watery stool like black tar continues Some of these kids are having a hard time with the carrots. Guest guest
It seems like " he " is starting out SCD, maybe not intro., but, if he's drinking juices too, it could be causing yeast. This was our case so, we just cut back on them. Not eliminated entirely. I'll let the SCD counselors answer questions from now on. Sorry. I thought there was a post of you all needing help here. Guest guest
Jenn, I appreciate your help in answering posts, but have no choice but to step in and clarify so no one else misunderstands and interprets that they were told on our list " not to use fruits " . I hope you understand.... This is a very big list, and you'd be surprised how easily people jump to conclusions and assume things. In your reply to Kristie, you said: <<I wouldn't do the fruits at all. Just the veggies and maybe a little fruit juice just to get the carbs. >> So, I appreciate that in your next post, you clarified it by saying: <<we just cut back on them. Not eliminated entirely. >> It's just that your first statement really did sound like you were suggesting eliminating fruits entirely (except for a little juice). I'm relieved to see that's not what you really meant. I know it may be true that some need to cut back on fruit and honey until yeast is under control, and I've stated that before. So, we aren't in disagreement about this.... I think there just needed to be some clarity for the sake of the many, many people who read this list but don't actively post. Thanks for understanding and please don't stop answering questions. I didn't mean to scold.... only to make things clear. Also, I'm pretty sure that, although she did mention being worried about it, Kristie's most pressing issue at the moment is not really yeast.... but in getting to the bottom of what's causing the black stool; especially to rule out bleeding. Patti Re: Re: Still watery stool like black tar continues It seems like " he " is starting out SCD, maybe not intro., but, if he's drinking juices too, it could be causing yeast. Guest guest
Since she has already been giving him the fruit juice and he's having a hard time with stools, he might benefit from not eating as much fruits right now. That is what I meant. As for the stool, I am not a doc and I did recommend her see a GI doc as we did. I am sorry if I caused any upheaval.
