Guest guest
Cathy, We usually advise those who've been dairy free prior to SCD to give it a few months before starting yogurt.... and then to start with extremely small amounts, only increasing if tolerated. I can't remember how much yogurt your son is eating now, but if I were you, I would probably stop for now. For one thing, you were using some illegal products up until recently.... so now that you have removed those, you might *almost* think of your family as having started all over from the beginning at this point. You may need to delay the start of yogurt for him a bit longer. I know we usually feel the benefits outweigh the negatives with goat yogurt for most kids... it seems pretty obvious that whatever this is... it's just too much to handle right now. You are using GOAT yogurt.... right? Which starter? Did you start the probiotic supplement at the same time? Or were you already using that? It is only l.acidophilus in the supplement... right? You would certainly not be the only family that had no choice but to make do with just probiotics in supplement form for this long.... or longer. It is vital to keep that going... as long as he's doing well with it. I would maybe try yogurt again after the first of the year, and just be completely 100% legal with every single other food or supplement that he's taking in. Gut-healing takes time. Patti Never seen behaviour this severe Sunday was no fun...I have never seen things so bad with my son before.I saw this coming saturday but I never thought it would get so bad. Such bad timing too!!!!!!!! We spent the afternoon at a funeral home 150 miles from home because of a death in the family. He was so difficult. I asked him to put on his coat when we arrived at the funeral home...it was cold..it was snowing...he was full of rage/very angry ...we had to chase him around the parking lot...He was screaming at us.....he was mad/crying when he charged in the door...2 very long hours.(non-stop problems...long drive home too!!!!) We brought to a funeral home last August when another family member passed away...he was the most well behaved kid anyone ever saw...he was very respectful, he was quiet, he hugged everyone.....he looked at all the pictures.... it was so important for him to be there.(He still had a pretty bad stutter, he had just started the SCD,all his behaviour issues were gone, we hadn't started probiotics yet) He didn't know my dear uncle well...it was not the loss that caused this . Monday/Tuesday he was a different boy...very nice, calm, he listen to me..I haven't seen this boy in over a month.(He ate no yogurt sunday and we had to wait for more which was not ready until tues afternoon) Since he started to eat the yogurt well( & probiotic capsule) the beginning of Nov. he has changed.(he also took antibiotics for strep the beginning of nov.).I thought it was die off in the beginning but I'm really not sure now. I am wondering if it was a bad idea to start the yogurt so soon?...he never ate dairy before the start of the scd...he tested alergic to it as a baby....he has a very leaky gut...dairy intolerance maybe too?...he is still intolerant to so much food I wonder if I could up the probiotic capsule...and just skip the yogurt for a while...I'm out of yogurt tonight(should I make more...????I don't want those bad guys to over take his gut...would the caspules be enough? We have been so stressed lately with his behaviour...He is becoming silly, difficult again. It is so close to Christmas... Ideas ? thanks, Cathy 9, 6 Started SCD aug 1 We did remove the illegal apple juice/sauce... has no gas now!! No other supplements
Guest guest
Thanks Patti, The yogurt probably was too soon, too much, and increased too fast. He was so happy to eat someting new...We were using the goat yogurt with the Gi pro health...Progurt.I can't remember when we started the yogurt but we started it with just part of a teaspoon(increased it over a month maybe?) and when he started his antibiotic for strep in nov. he started to really like the yogurt. He was eating up to 1/2-3/4 cup of drip yogurt daily since nov. and up to 1 cup daily just recently. We started the Gi pro health with L.acidophilus slowly the end of september...by the beginning of november he was taking the a whole capsule 3+billion cfus daily..1/2 capsule 2x a day. took a little longer but she is tolerating a whole capsule daily. So how much probiotic? He is starting to stutter...would an increase in probiotic help? He is behaving well today!!! Guest guest
Cathy, I am so sorry he can't seem to tolerate the yogurt right now, because I am just so convinced of it's healing qualities really doing good things for his gut.... but if you've pulled it out and he seems better now, there must be some connection with the behavior. I hope you can restart it again soon. It does seem that he tolerates the probiotic just fine, though? I am really a bit confused about the amount on the probiotic. Mimi forwarded something to me recently, and I need to go back and find it. I was thinking all this time that 3 billion was the max for probiotics, but that might not be true..... it may be that more is the recommendation. It was something that Mimi found that was written by Elaine.... I'll look for it tomorrow. Just out of curiosity, are you giving him cod liver oil? I'm dashing out the door (again) to yet another *fun* family holiday event.... =:-O Patti Re: Never seen behaviour this severe Thanks Patti, The yogurt probably was too soon, too much, and increased too fast. Guest guest
Patti, I think 's body thinks the dairy is gluten.(celiac) Both of these proteins are very similar. I think his gut has worsened. Both my kids reacted to tropicana OJ on sunday. had a very mild reaction.(R has always been my strong reactor) But ...it was so painful(emotionally too) for him..his lip swelled, very sore around his whole mouth, his lip bleed a bit it worsened over the next too days...you can still see a bit of red around his mouth today. He has never reacted so strongly! They both were tolerating Trop. OJ...but I bought a bigger container that had 120% of the daily vit c per serving...I had been using the miniture boxes of OJ with 50% of the daily vit c per serving and they were OK with those...exact same juice. Allergy or leaky gut? reacted in the same way to maple syrup candy halloween 2005(he was previously tolerating them)...it was bad ,but not as bad as the OJ. I didn't find out that my rice flour was contaminated with wheat until Jan 2006. My experience tells me this is just a leaky gut. As far as the cod liver oil, I have considered this...I tried some fish supplement with him before(3 years ago)...Seacure..white fish, rosemary extract, gelatin caspsule......He didn't tolerate this. The last time he had a bite of fish, it gave him a sore mouth.(2 years ago). I would have to try some fish before I would ever consider the cod liver oil. There is likely other ingredients in the cod liver oil which may be a problem??? I may have to wait a bit, unless he can tolerate fish. I may try the cod l o with though. is doing well today...but his words are getting a bit stuck today, and a bit of stuttering...maybe this will clear on its own.(I am hoping behaviour doesn't come with this...this worries me) I would be interested to here about the probiotics, no hurry... enjoy your holiday fun...don't get back to me till after the holidays if you like... We are fine, enjoying a calmer household now. Kind regards always, Cathy -- In pecanbread , " Patti " wrote: > > Cathy, > > I am so sorry he can't seem to tolerate the yogurt right now, because I am just so convinced of it's healing qualities really doing good things for his gut.... but if you've pulled it out and he seems better now, there must be some connection with the behavior. Guest guest
Patti, I was wondering if I could make some coconut milk if he tolerates this turn this into yogurt. I know this is a little soon for coconut ....maybe if I didn't give him too much he would be fine with it. He is getting loud really forces his words out and stuttering more...this may not be temporary...when he was doing the yogurt his speech was almost 100%. Or maybe I should increase the probiotic. Guest guest
Cathy, Coconut milk is fine now.... because you strain out all the fiber. I honestly do not know if it can successfully be made into yogurt. I honestly think that the anti-fungal, anti-bacterial qualities in coconut *might* inhibit the growth of the good bacteria in the fermentation process. I tried to find out more about this..... because I swear I read somewhere that coconut milk does not work as nut milks do, for yogurt making.... but no one seems to remember it and I can't find the posts that referenced it (years ago!). I really, really like coconut milk for these kids, though..... as a smoothie base or soup base.... especially if the child has ongoing problems with yeast. Guest guest
Cathy, I know Tropicana OJ is " legal " ..... but I am becoming more and more uneasy about the possible additives that just don't agree with some people. Have you tried just juicing whole oranges.... with one of those hand held thingies that you twist the orange half down on? Then you'd really know if it's something in the orange juices itself that is a problem.... or the additives. By the way..... what maple syrup candy was this?? You were not on SCD at that time? I know there is NO maple syrup that is legal... was this something that was SCD legal, just made with maple extract or something? Guest guest
Patti, I didn't think that tropicana OJ had additives in it. I thought it was just oranges. Maybe it's just oranges as I tried juicing them in the past and he couldn't have them.(2 years ago).He was tolerating the Oj..but I guess that changed. He was not on the SCD when he had the candy..that was only maple sugar..nothing else. All I was trying to say was that he can't be allergic to m sugar, he probably not allergic to orange..he gut is worse now..don't worry, I would never give him any kind of sugar..just a bit of honey Sorry for bugging you, Cathy > > > > Cathy, > > > > I am so sorry he can't seem to tolerate the yogurt right now, > because I am just so convinced of it's healing qualities really doing > good things for his gut.... but if you've pulled it out and he seems > better now, there must be some connection with the behavior. Guest guest
thanks Patti, I think I will make some coconut milk. I may be mistaken..but when I order my Yogurmet from Lucy's kitchen...I thought she said something about making yogurt from coconut..Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I should ask her. I can't even consider trying nuts for yogurt...nuts will be a long time .. thanks Again., cathy > > Cathy, > > Coconut milk is fine now.... because you strain out all the fiber. Guest guest
It could be that it does work with coconut milk.... I've just got a vague memory in the back of my mind that there was some reason why it doesn't.... or that the oil in coconut milk impedes the good bacteria from reproducing as much as they might in another medium. I'm not sure anyone has verified the probiotic population of coconut milk yogurt in a lab or anything. I wish I could come up with a link or an old saved message that referred to this. I've posted questions about it before, but never got responses from anyone. Maybe Lucy knows better. I'd actually love to know. I hope it works! Guest guest
I have made coconut yogurt when we were GFCF, before SCD. It worked, but I was using the canned version which has guar gum in it (thickener and emulsifier) which is not legal on SCD. I loved the taste of this yogurt (I love coconut), but I don't know if it would work without the gum in it. You don't have to heat it up, just throw in the probiotics & put in the yogurt maker for 12 hours.
Guest guest
You would have to make it from homemade coconut milk. I was just concerned about whether or not the probiotics could actually grow and flourish in the anti-bacterial environment of the coconut milk. As far as I know, no one's ever been able to answer that question for me. Did you put honey in the coconut milk to give the bacteria something to eat while fermenting? If not, I don't know how you would have any probiotics left alive after 12 hrs, unless they were eating the guar gum. How did you confirm that there were really lots and lots of lively good flora in the result? Did it firm up?
