Guest guest
Don't worry. Both are very normal. The increased stimming and other behavior issues are certainly due to die off of the yeast and other overgrown microbes in his gut. It's also very common for kids to eat more. It could be because he is actually starting to feel better than he ever has before. Also, his body needs a lot more nutritrion to convert into energy to do the " clean up " work, and heal itself. It could even partially be due to those bad gut bugs making him want to eat anything available in hopes that something will keep them alive. The stimming and behavior will likely decrease more and more as the gut is cleared out. He may continue to eat a lot for a while because he just needs the extra energy and nutrients. The healthy appetite is a good sign. Keep it up. Meleah SCD 05/06 iel 3.5yrs. ASD, Ethan 5yrs., Mark 20mths., both NT 7th day on SCD For anyone out there who is using SCD for their Autistic child. We are on the 7th day and after the 3rd day we noticed increased stimming, very needy, very easily upset, bad behavoir. I'm guessing this could be some sort of yeast die-off. We had similar results with kenokanzal (sp?), an anti-fungal. What has been others experiences? btw, he is eating more than he ever has since he was born 3.5 years ago. Constantly wanting to eat and asking for 2nd's and 3rd's. Thanks!
Guest guest
Hi Daddy, Yes, this is a kind of die off. Things you can do to make it more tolerable: * Epsom Salt soaks in a warm tub * Activated Charcoal Capsules for a brief time. Do not take it during meal times. Here is what one mother wrote: From Jo Children just starting out on the SCD may have an unusual appetite. The yeast in their bodies is no longer being fed with carbohydrates and sugars so they'll be craving high carbohydrates foods initially. Guest guest
Hi, We will be 7 days tommorrow and my son is also hungry all the time- which is good and bad. As the diet is still very restricted I am finding it hard to find things to feed him. He is using being hungry as a bedtime stalling tactic and not getting to sleep before 10pm. I have introduced half a ripe banana, stewed pears and carrot curls, my husband cooked him some banana pancakes for breaky (Isn't it amasing how starving a man can get them in the kitchen cooking recipes!!!) he is still eating mainly chicken and beef for meals and snacks (ate one quarter of a green bean with tea). Is there any thing else I could introduce at this point? He is extremely hyper but I think he is reacting to the natural chemicals in the pear juice. Still has not opened b's without suppository. Every second night I get him to have a spa with some Epsom salts which seems to help settle him down a bit but then the hunger kicks in again. Have you any other food or recipe suggestions please? Guest guest
Sharon, I might have asked you this before.... are you making your own pear juice? There is no commercial pear juice that is legal. Patti Re: 7th day on SCD Hi, We will be 7 days tommorrow and my son is also hungry all the time- which is good and bad. Guest guest
Hi Patti, No I get it in a can. It is made by the same company that makes the canned pears with natural pear juice (in Oz that is SPC Ardmona) It is 100% pear juice with no added sugar no artificial sweetnener, preservatives or colours and No other additives. As we are allowed pears in tins (we are allowed pears in tins aren't we?) I thought this would be legal as it is no different to the pears in the cans. I will verify with the Oz SDC group now that you have mentioned this though. Thanks Sharon (mum to tris 7yrs ADHD mild ASD) > Sharon, > > I might have asked you this before.... are you making your own pear > juice? As we are allowed Sharon, The pear must be labeled " in its own juice " not in pear juice. There is a differnce between own juice and added juice even if it is from the same fruit. Carol F. Guest guest
Oh, gosh..... no. Sorry! This pear juice..... AND the canned pears you're using are actually not legal. The only canned pears that would be legal would have to be labeled, as Carol pointed out, " in their OWN juice " .... which frankly, I think you are very unlikely to find ANYwhere in the world. I have not seen any in my area for many years. You would have to make your own fresh pear juice.... with a home juicer..... and cook you own pears. I have had great success with steaming peeled, cored and quartered fresh pears.... with just an inch of water in the bottom of the pot, below the steamer basket. Then KEEP that liquid!! It will be VERY sweet and can be used as " pear juice " .... or to sweeten other foods. I hope everyone in the Land of Oz is not using the canned pears and pear juice!! If so.... anyone who is not making super-duper progress must consider pulling those and making their own! Maybe food manufacturing processes are different down under, but here in the U.S., companies are allowed a loophole of adding " just a little " illegal sugar or starch to products like this without labeling it. PLUS.... that's not all, folks..... there is a particular thing that happens with commercial processing of both pears and apples..... even if NOTHING is added. It's something about the concentration of naturally occurring sorbitol in the fruit. Same reason we can't use any commercially bottled apple juice..... it's the cooking and filtering and concentrating that occurs in commercial canneries, even if they add zero illegals. So, for that reason, I honestly would pass on commercially canned pears, even if the label said " in it's own juice " .... unless my kid was doing phenomenally well in every way. Again,..... sorry! We just want to make sure all of your kids have the best possible chance of healing success. Patti Re: 7th day on SCD Hi Patti, No I get it in a can. Guest guest
Oops! I did post my question on SCDOZ but no one has responded to that particular question re the canned pears and juice, so I must assume that no one uses them-otherwise I would have expected positive responses like 'having no probs with them' Bugger- that's a big problem for me as we can't buy ripe pears here and it takes 2 weeks or more to ripen them in the cupboard-most of them get rotten spots before they are ready to eat. I will ask SDCOZ how they source ripe pears. (I bought my husband pineapple juice in the tin too so I assume its not legal either??) I still find this group more informative than OZ so if you don't mind me pestering you, I would like to continue on this list? Guest guest
Feel free to pester away, . The only pineapple juice that we can say is " officially " legal is Dole..... just plain pineapple juice. If you don't have that brand down there, you can write to the company to get verification that nothing is added.... then you just have to keep in mind that companies can change their formulas/recipes at any time, without notifying you! It's just an entirely different situation with pears and apples, I'm sorry to say.... so written verification doesn't matter. If you can find a freshly pressed apple cider, just straight from the press into the jug..... no cooking except to pasteurize, no filtering, found in the refridgerated section (will be brown and cloudy)..... then that's acceptable. I suppose the same would go for pear " cider " .... or fresh pear juice.... although I've never heard of it being available in stores. Sorry you don't have access to ripe pears. I honestly can't find them really, really ripe in my stores either..... I think because they don't transport well; are easily bruised and damaged. I put green ones into a paper bag and fold the top over and clip it with a clothespin. They ripen faster..... as will just about any other fruit (avocados included). Patti Re: 7th day on SCD Oops! Guest guest
Thanks Patti, We didn't give Tris anymore pear juice or tinned pears yesterday or today and the hyper behaviour has settled down remarkably. I was gob smacked at the dinner table tonight as I watched Tris eat boiled choko, a green bean, skinless zuchini, and pumkin (and heaps of carrot) with a smear of organic butter! This is a child who, in all of his life, has never eaten any other vegies except carrot, potatoe (usually as chips/frys) and cabbage. The bananas are making him loud and obnoxious due to the natural amines but I haven't the heart to pull them back yet-I will wait and see how he goes for a while longer. He is loving the almond flour and honey muffins (to assist his b movement) but I will have to very quickly learn to cook and bake some new recipes-so glad I decided to start SCD while I was on holidays, there is so much learning and preparation to do. We are going to the Farmers Market for the first time tommorrow, hopefully we will be able to stock up on pears, allowed fruits and vegies there. I am having to rethink all my grocery and shopping habits which is probably not a bad thing.
