Tricia,

What is the prednisone for? What's the dosage and what is the rate of weaning? I

see he has ASD but does he have a confirmed IBD diagnoses? Six weeks is really

not all that long on prednisone. The danger is weaning too fast if his body is

not ready for it but since we are not doctor's it is very difficult to give

advice about meds so if you can answer the above questions that would help us to

help direct you.

Hello,

Does anyone have experience with Prednisone? Our GI just prescribed a 6

week round for our son. It looks pretty hardcore. We've been SCD for a

month. any information is appreciated.

Charlene,

The prednisone is for lymphoid nodular hyperplasia and inflamation

that showed up on labs. He was scoped by Dr. Krigsman so I feel very

confident in what the doc is wanting us to do.However this looks like

a hardcore drug and I was just wondering how it went with others who

have used this drug. We will be weaning off slowly. I think because

this is not something we can do long term the doc is wanting to see

what effect this has on Aidan and then proceed from there.

Oh boy do I have experience with Prednisone!! My son (ASD,turning

4 on Monday) has been on Prednisone (3 mg/ml) since last March for a

variant of Landau-Kleffner syndrome. He started at 30 mg per day

and we are now down to 3 mg/day tapering off. I was very nervous

and downright scared of giving him this medicine in the beginning.

I remember sobbing the day I gave him his first dose because I was

afraid of the potential serious side effects. However, with careful

monitoring (daily blood pressure, monthly pediatrician follow ups,

monthly neurophysiologist follow ups, urine glucose monitoring, etc

the list goes on!) my son did well. The major thing you need to be

careful of is to not let your son gain a lot of weight because that

is when the side effects will kick in. My son only gained a total

of 3.5 pounds (he is also not a great eater to begin with). Some

kids will develop a voracious appetite which will make it hard for

Mom and DAd to play food police but it is really important that you

keep tight reigns on the weight gain. My son also developed what

they call " moon face " --the telltale bloated face that steroid users

get. For him, he looked like he had his baby face back. He also

developed some body hair, on his back especially but that will go

away as you taper and since your course is only 6 weeks, it probably

would not be an issue. Another issue is that the Prednisone, at

least our prescription, is mixed in a super sweet solution to make

it taste " good " because otherwise, it is horribly bitter I guess.

So, in terms of SCD, unless there is an alternative, it would not be

legal. In our case, the prednisone had to take precedence and he is

almost all done with it so my son will become more SCD legal in a

short time. Sorry this is so long. I would say do not be afraid of

the 6 week term. Watch closely for any adverse reactions. If you

want to email me directly, feel free. Good luck!

Tricia,

I have taken Prednisone for 8 months and then another 10 1/2 years,

my sister for 28 years (autoimmune disease). Yes, it is a " hard

core " medicine. My understanding is that it has a similar effect on

the gut as antibiotics, which has borne out in my experience. I

don't know if you are far enough on the diet to be doing probiotics

and/or yogurt, but if you are they would be very important. If he

winds up being on it more long term, calcium would be important as

well, because it causes osteoporosis. It is a powerful and effective

drug for reducing inflammation, but it comes with an equally high

price. I have found in my experience that working on my gut and diet

has helped manage my illness for many years without drugs(hence being

on Prednisone a considerably shorter time than my sister who chooses

not to address these issues).

Hope this helps.

Marti,

Too late for me. Seven years ago I was given Prednisone to dissolve nasal

polyps. I came

down with pneumonia and was given anti-biotic. Between the two meds, my immune

system took the beating that resulted in celiac disease and chemical

sensitivities.

Previously I had no recognizable symproms of either. I actually refused the

Prednisone, but

the doctor said surgery was the alternative, it was only a two week diminishing

dose and I

was acing like a baby. One month later, I was crying like one.
