Guest guest
Carol, Do you have to choose just one? I didn't know they were both SCD legal. I gave up coffee (like you I enjoyed one cup a day - but fairly strong!), before starting the intro diet. I had a headache and cravings for 5 days. They're both high in antioxidants aren't they. Coffee seems to work in several ways...doesn't it cause toxins to be eliminated through some rise in liver enzymes (?) - I'm not sure exactly how it works? And I know it helps me with cognitive function and focus! I know it's a methyl donor which may be of interest to adults with autism? Red wine is good for the heart I think? Probably not least because it's relaxing. I'd choose coffee in the morning and red wine in the evening ;-) OK, just one? In my case, because I think I had developed some level of dependance on the coffee, I'd go with red wine, just one glass and not every night. Guest guest
Hi Carol, If I had to choose one (and the wine is dry to be SCD legal, right?) I'd choose the wine for cooking. I don't drink wine or coffee but either is good to cook certain things with. The coffee more for desserts and the wine for lots of things if you cook out the alcohol and just get the flavor. Good luck on your decision , Debbie, 37, cd dx 3/02 Pentasa, SCD 1/07 > > > > > > Carol, > > Do you have to choose just one? > > > > I didn't know they were both SCD legal. Guest guest
Well, as much as I love a good cup of coffee, I have done a cup a day for an extended period of time and then made myself go w/ for an extended period of time and what I found was that I had more energy w/o the coffee and could think more clearly too (I expected to find the opposite). What I noticed was that when you regularly drink it, you need it to think and stay " perky. " When you avoid it you can think more clearly and have more energy. That was my experience -- try the experiment on yourself ad keep a journal (one month on coffee, one month off). My opinion on all of the benefits of wine drinking is that you also have to factor in the type of meal that generally goes with wine. Us Americans are looking for that secret ingredient in the European diet that accounts for some of their better health so we zero in on wine -- ignoring the fact that the Europeans are eating meals the way they should be eaten: 1) at a table 2) sitting 3) with family/friends 4) with a delicious healthy meal I think that if Americans added a glass of wine to their meals, which are often eaten: 1) on the couch, watching TV or in a car or at their desk 2) standing over the kitchen counter/sink 3) family all split up between various schedules of soccer practice and working late 5) after dialing Domino's Delivers!!! There would not be so much of a health benefit. I say this because of a study done on cholesterol lowering drugs that had to be halted because one set of rabbits that was to be tested did not develop the high cholesterol that they should of despite being on the same diet as the 3 other sets of rabbits that were to take part in the study (that did develop high cholesterol). Turns out the researcher in charge of those rabbits was an animal lover. He fed the cholesterol-raising diet to the rabbits while he held and cuddled them. The other researchers tossed the feed in the cages and walked away. So when the rabbits were loved while they were fed the bad diet, they suffered no ill effects. This makes me think about the Europeans and the wine -- if we would just eat in a loving stress-free environment, we might have the same health improvements without the wine. - Carol Frilegh wrote: Latest news articles keep an otherwise improved tummy churning :-) I just read that caffeine does not give you the boost it is supposed to. On the other hand, a very new study informs us that raising a mere half glass of Cabernet Sauvignon or some other red wine daily may help us not live forever, but live better health wise. So today I had my wine with lunch and find it promotes a sense of well being equal to the coffee, except I can't drive anywhere. I now have three large bags of organic coffee in the freezer ad four very small " splits " of red wine on the counter and frankly, don't know which way to turn. Both are SCD legal. One is not " street legal " if one is behind the wheel.Wjat would your choice be? ( this is not for the kiddies!) Carol F. Guest guest
How do you know which wine has a zero sugar content? I thought Merlot was a dry wine, is this wrong? Decaf is not legal as it may have starch in it. I dilute my wine a bit and add saccharine. Wine with a " zero " sugar content is what is legal.. As to focus, I had to rush to the vet after 1/2 glass of diluted wine and kept feeling like my right eye wanted to turn inward :-) Cheers! CarolF. " You need to inquire at your package store or winery or contact the vintner on the label. Here is a Toronto website that includes the sugar content of various wines. Most here seem to be rated at " 1, " but it gives you an idea of how wines are described in detail I use the Santa Carolina Cabernet, not listed here but it is a zero and comes in split bottles so one doesn't need to consume a lot at once to keep it from spoiling. It's good for about two day. It is not a fine or vintage wine, only about $5.00 a 12 oz. bottle, but is quite satisfactory. I add a saccharin tablet. and have about 3 oz. a day when I get into a wine mode every few months. Carol F. SCD 7 years, celiac
Guest guest
Hi , This website has a large database of wines: http://www.nbliquor.com/prod-search.asp If you put the name of your wine in you can see if it is listed and if the sugar content is " 00 " which would indicate that it is very dry and suitable for SCD. Also if you want you can enter sugar content of " 00 " and a type of wine (for example Austrailian Red Table wines) and get a list of wines to look for at your local liquor store. Guest guest
So cool!!! I tried it and got a list of red wines with zero sugar! Thank you so much. -- Re: Legal SCD Coffee or Booze ?
