Guest guest
Grandma Bev, Does your prayer chain only pray for " specific people " , or do you also pray for " things " . Have you ever asked the chain to pray for a cure? Just curious. I can't see where we are any closer to a cure and the clock keeps ticking. Guest guest
I am just wondering if requesting prayers is really " religion on the list " since no one ever asks us to pray to a specific Diety? And we never discuss what religion we follow unless it has to do with CF (IE Mutations in Specific Jewish populations) Just thinking...... What exactly is religion on the list? Whatever the definition, I am happy to follow it, I am just curious. Re: Say a prayer Just a friendly reminder of cfparents list rules. ~ ------------------------------------ LIST RULES 1. Guest guest
, You are so smart, you should have been an attorney,:-) I took the liberty of looking up definitions for both religion and prayer. Here they are: Let it be known that I am a devout Catholic, but rules are rules. prayer1 n. 1. a. A reverent petition made to God, a god, or another object of worship. b. The act of making a reverent petition to God, a god, or another object of worship. 2. An act of communion with God, a god, or another object of worship, such as in devotion, confession, praise, or thanksgiving: One evening a week, the family would join together in prayer. 3. A specially worded form used to address God, a god, or another object of worship. 4. prayers. A religious observance in which praying predominates: morning prayers. 5. a. A fervent request: Her prayer for rain was granted at last. b. The thing requested: His safe arrival was their only prayer. 6. The slightest chance or hope: In a storm the mountain climbers won't have a prayer. 7. Law. a. The request of a complainant, as stated in a complaint or in equity, that the court grant the aid or relief solicited. b. The section of the complaint or bill that contains this request. re·lig·ion n. Abbr. rel., relig. 1. a. Belief in and reverence for a supernatural power or powers regarded as creator and governor of the universe. b. A personal or institutionalized system grounded in such belief and worship. 2. The life or condition of a person in a religious order. 3. A set of beliefs, values, and practices based on the teachings of a spiritual leader. 4. A cause, a principle, or an activity pursued with zeal or conscientious devotion. -idioms get religion. Informal. To accept a higher power as a controlling influence for the good in one's life. > I am just wondering if requesting prayers is really " religion on the list " since no one ever asks us to pray to a specific Diety? Guest guest
Hi: This is just my personal opinion. I founded another CF support list several years ago, and recently a couple of members posted copyrighted sectarian prayers to the list. In effect, the prayers promoted a specific evangelical religion the act of which I found offensive. I do not equate asking for prayers on " cfparents " with that type of post. One member of that list also posted a copyrighted editorial blaming American Muslims for not helping to find Muslim terrorists in the U.S. I also found that offensive as it was inaccurate and defaming a religious group who are not responsible for terrorism in our country. No other subscriber to the list (conncoll) complained about the offensive posts other than me and when I did, I received no support from the members. I unsubscribed from the list I founded in deep regret, but I do have my standards. With the release and commercial promotion of a film by Mel Gibson which once again casts the Jewish people in the role of murderers of Christ, there is a growing insensitivity to Muslims, Jews, and people of various faiths. Our President professes to be a " Christian who has found Jesus. " He's the first to make it a political statement and issue (President called himself a Christian but was a racist) and Attorney General Ashcroft has declared that the United States is a Christian nation. His statement is divisive and frightening to many Americans who know we have thrived as a nation with the separation of church and state. I enjoy " cfparents " for its honesty in questioning issues not only involving CF but those we face every day. If someone asks for prayers, I gladly comply, but there's no guarantee a deity will be listening to little ole me! Guest guest
Hal, You just made a good point and I suppose that's the reason this list has the " no religion rule " . Anybody could post offensive material to any ethnic group, in a subtle way. When I was in college my best friend was from India, she was a Hindu of Tamil descent. Every time she open her mouth and said she was of another religion, invariably somebody tried to give her the whole hell spill... I have always been a Catholic, I grew in a country were there is no racial problem, never has. When I moved to this country, that was a big adjustment for me, even though we are supposse to be past racial segregation, it is still very present in the south, again in a subtle way. Unfortunately, it goes both way, another of my good friends from college of African- American descent fell in love with a caucasian fellow, and married him, all hell broke loose. Her dad, a prominant doctor in Memphis, had a coronary, of course they had to accept him, but it took a long time. Well, my point is that we live in a very complicated world, where fanatism has proven to make it more difficult, I believe Mel Gibson is a fanatic of his " Roman Catholic " religion. In the last two thousand years very little has changed. > Hi: This is just my personal opinion. Guest guest
Started not to touch this one but....... This list has this rule that I follow because I like it here and feel like I know y'all. I understand the reason for it, hopefully, that is because we'd all get so bogged down in arguing religion that we'd ruin the dialogue that the list was created for. Even though there are places where there is " no religion " allowed, in public that " freedom of speech " thing keeps rearing it's head - along with " freedom of religion " . Let's remember this applies to evangelical Christians as well as all other groups. Basically, any person, President or otherwise has the freedom to say whatever he wants regarding his faith. He can even stand on the Whitehouse steps and pray aloud. I realize that at a sanctioned public event a handful of people would raise a ruckus. Also Ashcroft, in saying we were a Christian nation, I believe was referring to the fact that the standards we follow (sanctity of human life, slow to anger, non- aggressors, free society etc.) are mirrored in the Bible and most all of our founding fathers were professing Christians. Not to mention the fact that the country was founded by people who wanted to worship the God of the Bible freely. Realizing of course that there is plenty of room for and these rights apply to people who worship other gods as long as the religion doesn't break the law. Boy, I know I'm already in trouble but here I go again.... I think it's a well-documented fact, not only in the Bible but in other writings - such as those of Jocephus that the Jewish Sanhedrin delivered Jesus up to be crucified and along with the Roman soldiers carried it out. That said, I love the Jewish people and totally respect their religion. Personally I believe that His blood is on the hands of the entire world - including my own. But that is an area I'm not allowed to go. I love you all and respect your opinions. Please do not censor mine. Joe > Hi: This is just my personal opinion. Guest guest
Well, this site does NOT say that we cannot pray, nor that we cannot post privately to the individual and send aprivate e-mail expressing whatever we feel. I do that all the time. I think that positive vibes and highest hopes, and pulling hard and all those expressions are fine for the list as a whole, having read the guidelines which govern all of us here; a private e-mail saying whatever you want is encouraged. And NO ONE is even hinting that you not pray like mad as you type--merely, that we not refer to religion on list, nor use religious terms--we will not get into the very powerful feelings that I am sending with each post to those in need; so I send a non-religiously toned post on list and whatever I FEEL will assist the person the most in private--and NO guidelines to this suggest anything else. This avoids the religious contentiousness that has been so inflammatory on many lists! I do hope you do not take offense at this, but I myself, when very ill, would far prefer that people unite in positive whatever for me than use terms that might put someone in my supportive list in an uncomfortable position. But that is me. I do hope that you are not upset by this, but I have been on lists that crumbled over this one, and do not want that to happen here-- even though you may well be factually correct---just do it and send a private post to whomever you choose! With more love than the tone of this post would lead anyone to believe, your list friend, n Rojas, wcf, mom of 3 adults: 2 cf carriers and the youngest wcf as well. . . . . . . . . . . . . . Re: Say a prayer I read something somewhere that cited a study. This study indicated that according to statistics, those who are prayed for do better than those who are not. mom to Henry, 2 wcf
