Guest guest
I am so aggravated. My doctor has told me that she will no longer prescribe me my pain meds. The reason? I told her that we needed to switch them up and that I was taking more then prescribed. I have been on oxycontin and oxycodone in the past and fentynal. I have recently been able to handle it with vicoprofen. I am now without and miserable. I don't do much because of the pain. I don't understand how or why she can do this. I am 27 and have had this disease since I was 20. I have been on meds since. I have had the same doctors the whole time. I went to the emergency room about two weeks ago and told the doctor to test my triglycerides and that my amylase and lipase don't elevate much anymore so don't be surprised. He then proceeded to give me morphine and I told him that is not what they usually give me and that morphine sent me to ICU and previous doctors said never to take it again. He said that was my only option and gave me multiple doses. He then told me I had taken as much as someone with a major injury and started to tell me that I just wanted the high because I was telling him demerol is the only one that gets the pain. Well he finally looked back in the computer records and sarcastically said that he would give me demerol purely because the records stated thats what I had last time. Well to his surpise it helped and I was no longer keeled over in pain and crying. He then came in and told me that my amylase and lipase were not that elevated and that he did not believe that I had pain. This on top of my doctor and now I am getting angry. He released me quite quickly. A week late I finally went to another hospital because of pain. I had never been to this other hospital for my pancreatitis because the first one always took care of me. Well the other hospital believed me and gave me fentynal and made me feel better. He checked my triglycerides and sure enough they were over 3000. He actually listened. Now I am at a block. I don't know what to do or where to go for someone to help me. I need to be back on my meds. I am in Maine and if anyone has any information or advice I would so appreciate it. In all my years I have never had this problem. thanks jana
Guest guest
Janna, It's sad to say, but sometimes telling the truth can get us in trouble when we least need it. Obviously, your doctor didn't appreciate your telling her that your current med dosages weren't working well enough, and that you had increased them without her consent. I do suggest that in the future, you never increase your meds without discussing it first with your doctor. Most doctor's who are treating a patient with narcotics like to be kept up to date on their patient's complaints and med requirements, and it appears that this doctor was no exception. Personally, I have found that by discussing beforehand the possibility of there being times when my current dosage wouldn't be enough to cover my pain, my doctors have been willing to suggest an increase, until further assessment can be made. And those times have happened where I've had to double up, yet by discussing this eventuality beforehand, I was able to go into the doctor(s) and explain the reasons I had to do so, and not be lectured or come into their disfavor. Many doctors nowadays don't like to prescribe narcotics for their chronically ill pain patients, and prefer that arrangements be made through a Pain Management Doctor to handle their patient's narcotic medications. My GI is one example of this. Last year I got to the point where he had prescribed Oxycontin for me for the first time, and even that medication wasn't helping with my pain. So then he backed off and told me he'd arranged for me to see a PM doctor from then on, who would handle all my analgesic prescriptions. He wasn't comfortable or knowledgeable about the heavier analgesics, and wanted me seen by someone who was. I do suggest that you try to locate a Pain Management clinic as soon as you can. They are often comprised of Anesthesiast's or Psyiatrists or doctors that deal with neurological problems. I'm not quite clear on what footing you're still on with your doctor, or whether or not you are still seeing her. If you are, since she's told you she won't prescribe any more pain meds for you, perhaps she would be willing to make a referral for you, or write a letter of referral for you to use when seeking a PM doctor or clinic. If she isn't willing to do this for you, and isn't willing to prescribe meds for you herself, you would probably be better off with a whole new doctor all together. As for your hospital treatment, that seems pretty obvious. If it were me, I'd go to where I was treated the best, with compassion and understanding, and by someone who paid attention to my needs and my requests. The " other " hospital fits the bill for that. Good luck, and let us know what happens. With love, hope and prayers, Heidi Heidi H. Griffeth South Carolina State Rep. Guest guest
Jana, unfortunately, it sounds like you might need to get another doctor or maybe see if she will send you to a pain clinic or pain specialist to help deal with the pain since she is no longer willing to prescribe the pain meds.
