I actually live in colun=bia for the time because i am in school at columbia

college. so i haven't been to see my doctor in st. louis in awhile. But i did

see Dr. Burton at st. louis university but at cardinal glennon i saw Dr. Kane.

I am 20 so i had just switched over form Kane to Burton but he had been

consulting me for a long time. I have done every test imangiable at least it

seems like to me. ERCP, MRI, ultrasounds, cat-scans, MRCP, probably more i just

can't remember. They don't really tell me that much since my pancreas is sooooo

damaged, basically just wait until the future to tell what else may happen.

Theres not much they can do or sugget i think that that is the hardest part is

that there is really nothing to do but deal with the pain and take the pain

meds. It sucks. What kind of pancreatitis do you have? I have ideopathis

pancreatitis. In columbia i see Dr. Cleavinger and he is great he has made the

transition up here a lot easier. Hope that you are having a

good day and feelign well. Talk to you later. Thaks for respondign to me.

about the pain. I had some surgery in February and so far things are much

better than it used to be. My attacks used to be so severe that I would go to

the hospital in my area and get hooked up on IV's of Morphine for the pain and

liquids to keep me hydrated. They would last any where from 3 to 10 days. They

would keep track of my enzyme levels until they returned to normal and try to

ease me back onto solid food.

What is your Doc telling about your pancreas? What tests have been done?

I sincerely hope you can find some relief and get some answers soon. Bob

Hi , thanks for writing back. That has to be rough, trying to get through

school and deal with this diease. I'm an old guy,LOL my son is at Rolla. I

know a little what you are going through just to get your studies done. I hope

you can keep it up and get your degree. I have to commend you for your

diligence. Dr. Burton is my Doc. He seems to listen to what you have to say.

I know what you mean, the list of tests seem to be forever. I probably can't

remember all the tests that I've been through either. The only thing that we

can blame my pancreatitis on is alchohol. I stopped drinking 23 years ago, but

I gues the damage had already been done. All the " fun " I had is cacthing up to

me. I worry about my son as he may be predisposed to this disease as you know ,

college isn " t all studies.LOL I'm sorry you are having so much trouble. I know

it gets very frustrating and depressing at times. I hope that the doctors there

can help you with your pain and get to the bottom of

things. I've been doing pretty good up until just a couple of hours ago. The

pain has gone into my back. I don't know what caused this attack as I've not

done anything out of the ordinary. That's the way this disease goes, though

I'm getting ready to call it a night. Took some pain meds awhile ago, so it's

time to go rest up. Hope you are feeling well today. Write me when ever you

get time. Bob

So do you like Dr. BUrton? I have never really liked him very much. I don't

know why he is very knowledgeable but i think i was to young and he was just to

intimadating for me. I remember him scaring me so maybe i have just carried

that with me all these years. After i switched over to him I only saw him about

3 times because then i moved to Columbia to go to school. I sure hope that your

son is being responsible becasue this disease I wouldn't wish on anyone. And if

you can prevent it you defintaly should. I have some freinds that go to Rolla

and one that actually just left it this past year becasue they didn't like it.

Does your son like rolla? I hope he's not having to much fun like you said. I

guess it's kinda good in some way to have this because its an incentive not to

drink or do anything else except morphine of course the drug of choice. LOL well

hope you are having a better day than yesterday. Best wishes. St. Louis

Hi How are you doing today? Hope you are feeling OK. I felt preety good

for a few hours this morning then the bootom fell out again. Oh well I will

just have to ease back on what I have been eating. Been eating more to try and

gain some weight, but probably pushing too much through my system. Back in

March I weighed 115# and 5'8 " . managed to gain back 15# so far. I have to be

careful in a high wind so I don't blow away. LOL Dr. Burton sorta grows on you.

He has a really dry sense of humor. Sometimes I try whatever it takes to get him

to laugh. It's like going to Buckingham Palace and trying to get the guards to

laugh. It ain't easy. But, it's a challenge. When I first got sick there

wasn;t a GI doc in the area, so my regular doc and another doc in St. Louis

refered me to him. He always listens to me and answers my questions. So far

he's been keeping me going, so I have no complaints.

My son is in his third year at Rolla. He says he likes it. Hope he does or he

is a glutton for punishment.LOL He says he has another year and a half to go to

get his degree in structural engineering. Since he has been there so long I

hope he sticks with it. He does have too much fun in my opinion. He has seen

what I've gone through, but it doesn't seem to make any difference. He's always

had the attitude that it won't happen to him. I sincerely hope it doesn't.

Like you said, I wouldn't wish this disease on anyone. I feel so bad for the

young people like youself who have this horrible disease. You have so much of

life to live yet and it doesn't seem fair. I on the other hand had my good

times and now am paying for it. What is your major at Columbia? How long have

you been going there? I'll stop rambling for now. Write me when you get time.

Well today was about the same for me. But i actually felt ok enough to play

intermural volleyball this evening. This is my favorite sport that i had to

give up because of this stupid disease. I wanted so bad to play in college but

i guess that intermural will have to do for now. I am in my third year I

transvered from Lindenwood University and have been here in Columbia for two

years now. this is the school that i wanted to go to since my junior year in

high school but didn;t straight out of HS because of CP. But i am really happy

here now. I think i probably have about two more years. I sometimes haven't

been able to take a full load so i am a little behind and i just switched my

major from education to psychology. well see i hope that i just continue to

feel good enough to go to school. i always fear that it will get so bad it will

put even more of a damper on my life and forbid me from continuing school and i

don't want that to happen. Well i have to get to studying and

lay doen b/c i over did myself in v-ball but thats what you'll do sometimes for

something you love and enjoy. I just hope it doesn't carry over into tomorrow I

have a test and cna't miss it. Are you hopitalzied a lot? I have gone a whole

year and i am soooooo excited. Well have a good day

Hope you are feeling better. I know that there are times when you just get

tired of having to give up so much because of the disease. Even if you know

you'll get sick you do something or eat something that we know we're not

supposed to. Sometimes you just have to. I was a drummer for years before I

got sick. After that I had to quit any of the groups i had played, because I

never knew when the next attack would come. I don't play out anymore, but still

have my kit setup in a bedroom. I try to play 4 or five times a week for about

an hour just to get the excercise and work out a little frustration. I was

disabled with this thing in January, so I try to keep busy doing something to

keep my sanity.

I hope you can keep up with school also. I think you have to have some goals to

keep busy and lead as normal a life as possible. From what I can figure out is

to really watch what you eat. Try to keep your fat grams down. Did a doc ever

tell you anything about a diet to follow? I find if I keep my fat intake to

around 30 grams per day I do OK most of the time. That's no guarantee that the

thing won't flare up, but it is a general guideline.

I'm proud of you that you haven't given up. You are going to make it through

school, even if you are a little behind, because you are determined to make it.

Good luck on your test. I've rambled enough for now. write me when you get

time, Bob

Yeah I have been told to keep the fat content down and try to eat as healthy as

i can. This is a huge struggle expecially at college the food here isn't that

good at all expecially since i am a vegetarian which limits the food even more.

I sure hope that I make it through college. There is really no rush because

even if I graduate this year I am not well enough to hold down a full time job.

I think thats the main reason to why I'm not really focusing on when I'll

graduate because it makes me a little depressed that even if i get my degree i

can't go work at this point in time. Have you done any alternative methods to

deal with the pain? HAve to go to class hope you have a good day and feel good

I imagine it's hard to get any thing thats good for you at college as far as

food goes.LOL I saw your post about tp/ict. I asked Dr. Burton about that last

year, when I was in constant pain and was getting desperate for the pain to

stop. He told me that if he would do that, it doesn't guarantee a cure plus it

would be possible to become diabetic. If that would happen then you run into

another set of problems. (bad circulation and vision problems) Right now, I

have most of my pancreas and it doesn't bother it to eat sweets.

In your case though it might be something to look into if they can't find

anything else to do for you. I also hear that some people still have ghost pain

afterwards. But there is always a chance that you would come out real good.

You asked if I had been in the hospital much. I had a whipple procedure done in

March, 04 and have only been in the hospital once since then. Prior to that the

docs and nurses at the hospital in Farmington knew my name and face as I was a

regular patient every 3 to 4 weeks. It was my home away from home.LOL I would

be in so much pain and then start hurling. They would hook me up with morphine

and IV's to keep me hydrated until the enzyme levels would come back in line.

But now the disease has progressed to the point that the enzyme levels don't

elevate much anymore because the pancreas is getting weaker and calcified. I

still have bad days, but they aren't as severe and don't last as long. I don't

know how long this will last because I've had three other surgeries that didn't

last more than a year, but I'll enjoy this while it lasts. I'm on Sandostatin

to keep my pancreas from working so hard and take enzyme supllements to take up

the slack and digest my food . Are you on

any enzymes?

You must feel like you're between a rock and a hard place. If you persue a

remedy to your situation you may have to drop out of school and start over but

if you don't you will have problems holding a job because of the disease. It

might be a good idea to go to your doc and see what he thinks about your

prognosis and diagnosis so you can make some decisions.

I've never used any alternative medicines for this disease, but several years

ago did use acupuncture for bursitis in the shoulder and it worked out real

well. Some people have success with different methods. Every situation is

different.

TGIF!!!

do you get home much on the weekends? It might help to get home and relax once

in a while. School can get pretty stressful at times. Stress can cause flare

ups. Some docs will disagree but it really does cause problems. Hope you are

feeling good and having a good day. Bob
