Guest guest
Bethany, My 18 yo son is diagnosed with severe, non-verbal, low-functioning autism. He has been SO ACTIVE most of his life. In fact, last Jan. we began buying exercise balls for him and he would sit on one and bounce most of the day. He was so active and seemed very happy to be bouncing but the bouncing had an intensity about it that seemed not quite right. (we have bought about 15 balls so far, as his intensity would break them one after the other). After starting on SCD (the right way), he quit using the ball. He became so quiet and did not seem to need the intensity of the bouncing of the ball. I have speculated that doing SCD helped his bowels to finally begin to feel better. We had done gfcf, but although it seemed to help, I had felt that the grains did not seem to work as well for him, not just the gluten. We are still working with the diet and trying to get stable, but I am sure this is the way to go--just seeing how he no longer needs the bouncing ball to (I suppose) counteract the pain in his gut has helped me to commit to it. Even more than that, had been drooling for years and no one could tell me how to intervene effectively. His drooling has stopped and he know longer chews on things--his clothes, all kinds of things. We had used antifungals for years and although it seemed we saw improvement for a time, always things got worse again. I believe that using SCD and healing the bowel will be better than staying on antifungals indefinitely. Incidentally, I have heard that you might want to get farther along with healing the bowel before starting chelation, either because of seeing flares when you used the chelation agents or not seeing any improvement when the bowel, which is being used to get rid of the toxins, is not able to deal with them properly. I encourage you in the SCD, but be sure to start as they say: soups and slow and progress. I think you will see a great improvement in your daughter's hyperactivity as you follow SCD. I only wish we had been able to use SCD earlier for our son. Carfagno, mom to , age 18 yo, SCD since 9/06 Can anyone offer me some hope??? Posted by: " niceneezer " niceneezer@... niceneezer Date: Mon Feb 12, 2007 8:27 am ((PST)) I am considering starting this diet for my 5 year old ASD daughter. We've been on the GFCF diet for over a year. I don't think it really has helped her a whole lot... Her biggest problem is hyperactivity. She is constantly moving, jumping, climbing and has been this way since she was a toddler.... I know she has yeast and we give her anti-fungals but the hyperness is always there...We have been doing biomed for 4 months or so and just started chelation. I've ordered the book and have read the website. Forgive me for asking a question that is probably in the book but I need some hope...Will this diet help her with hyperactivity?? Will it allow her to enjoy the activities she so desperatley wants to do?? I feel so sorry for her because she physically cannot sit still... I refuse to put her on ritalin or anything like that. She will be in kindergarten next year and I feel if something does not change she will not be able to learn. Thanks so much, Bethany --------------------------------- Don't pick lemons.
