Guest guest
Hi , << Where do you get charcoal tablets?>> Many drug stores will carry them (check the ingredients for illegals). You may also find them at some health food stores. <<What is their purpose, and how helpful are they? >> The activated charcoal can adsorb and absorb toxins in the body. For this reason they are helpful at " sopping up " toxins released during the die off of harmful microbes. << I am in the middle of a big flare-up, and need some help. I'm trying to avoid prednisone, even though I have B, D, and M. >> HAve you tried going back to the intro diet for a few days? What foods are you eating ? How is the food prepared? Guest guest
Sheila, Thank you for explaining charcoal tablets. I'll try those. I'm still having a big flare up. I went back to the intro diet for a few days. Now I eat chicken or fish, along with peeled and well-cooked carrots, zucchini, pears, or squash. Today I tried some avocados for lunch, and I don't think it worked too well. I also had eggs for breakfast, and that didn't work either. I'm cramping up pretty bad. Guest guest
Hi , Did going on the intro help at all? If it did you may want to try it again to get your flare settled. If some things seem to work for you why not stick to them exclusively for a few days. If you try something new (like the avocado) just go with tiny amounts in case it causes more cramping. How did you cook the eggs (poached or boiled are easiest - I find poached the easiest for me to digest: no fats/oils). Are you normally okay with eggs? If not, you may want to consider free range chicken eggs or hormone/antibiotic free eggs instead. Are you on any meds for UC besides Asacol? Will your doctor increase them to help with your flare? Guest guest
Hi, I am sorry but am breaking the rule of reading book before posting (ordered but hasn't arrived yet) but am curious as to how the SCD fits with people who have significant intolerances to natural chemicals-salicylates,amines,suplhur and benzoates? We planned to start after xmas but reading the recipes makes me wonder how on earth are we going to do the diet AND still avoid all those chemicals. I am very concerned about the die off reaction as I have significant problems with diareah (especially from fruit) as it is. Is there any thing we can take to make it less 'unpleasant' or supps I should get a hold of first? Regards Sharon > Sheila, > > Thank you for explaining charcoal tablets. Guest guest
Most of these intolerances are caused by a damaged gut that contains far too may pathogenic microorganisms. For example, certain bacteria produce the decarboxilation of amino acids;that leads to the making of amines and carbon dioxide. After the gut heals with SCD,these intolerances should resolve. Guest guest
Welcome to the Group Sharon, << We planned to start after xmas but reading the recipes makes me wonder how on earth are we going to do the diet AND still avoid all those chemicals. >> Some people are on the SCD and are careful to avoid SCD food with phenols, salicylates etc... As the gut heals these sensitivities seem to be healing. Others who don't wish to avoid the foods with phenols, slaicylates etc.. take enzymes targeted for these compounds. Others do a combination of both avoiding the foods and the enzymes while on the SCD. << I am very concerned about the die off reaction as I have significant problems with diareah (especially from fruit) as it is. >> If you have severe diarrhea we generally recommend that you start with the intro diet for 4-5 days. This will optimally help clear you out, starve the nasty microbes and feed the body. The intro can be done with or without dairy: http://pecanbread.com/foodprep.html#intro (dairy free intro) http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info/beginners_guide/beginners.htm (original version including dairy) If your bm's aren't to severe you can stick with 2-3 days on the intro. After the intro sticking with easy to digest foods and gradually re-introducing and increasing foods will give you your best chance for healing the gut. Fats and oils are harder to digest so boiled and broiled meats are easiest. Peels and raw fruit and veggies are more difficult so we usually suggest peeled and cooked fruit and veggies until symptoms start to subside with the healing of the gut. Guest guest
Dear Sheila, Thanks for all the links. I have printed them all out (I am not very good with web sites). I also since received the book in the mail and read that yesterday. To prepare for the diet; should I get rid of all foods (rice, rice flours, rye bread etc) that are not legal? My husband and I will be going on this diet with Tris. Tris and I have been on the failsafe diet for almost 2 years and it has become a problem in my husband and I's relationship. So we have decided, for support and unity and relationship sake, that he will go on this diet with us. I looked at the recipes and never in my wildest dreams (after going GF/CF/SF and chem free) imagined eating foods like SDC recipes ever again. I am prepared to wait a while but if me and Tris can eat those foods one day-I will be ecstactic. Thanks for the info on the enzymes too. We live in Aust and it may take some time to get them-should I order them now or wait and see how we go first? I will be okay with swallowing charcoal tabs but how do you get a 7yr old with strong gag reflex and who can't swallow tabs to take charcoal? Guest guest
For someone who can't swallow the charcoal tablet, just use something to crush it up. Mix it into applesauce or something. Yes, definitely get rid of any rice products. They're not SCD legal. It will help you and your husband to resist the temptation to give in. So we have decided, for support and unity and > relationship sake, that he will go on this diet with us. >> I started the diet by myself so there were illegals still in the house. A few months into the diet my husband and kids joined me and at that time we cleaned the cupboards, fridge and freezer. We gave unopened illegals to the foodbank, some opened foods to other relatives and threw out the rest. It made a huge difference to me not to have to look at the illegals any more - I can only imagine that it will enormously helpful for your child. Not having to see the illegals and know that you are all on the diet together It is a huge sacrifice that not all families are able to do. << Thanks for the info on the enzymes too. We live in Aust and it may take some time to get them-should I order them now or wait and see > how we go first? >> Probably best to wait and see what just starting the diet brings. << I will be okay with swallowing charcoal tabs but how do you get a 7yr old with strong gag reflex and who can't swallow tabs to take charcoal? >> Some dump the activated charcoal from a capsule into juice or homemade fruitsauce. Some people make SCD legal Jello/gelatin with it.
