TINA W., MOTHER OF STEPHANIE, 18YO WCF Hot Tubs We asked the doctor at Zach's diagnosis if Zach could use our hot tub. He said if we had it regularly checked and no one else used it that it should be ok. has the water tested weekly or sometimes even twice a week. But the webcast said that all hottubs are a big no no. The chlorine cannot kill the PA at high heat. We are just sick about this. We let Zach play in the hottub last summer. It was his own little pool. I feel so dumb. Two summers ago built the deck himself around this used hottub that a relative gave us for free. We felt so lucky to have this luxury in our back yard. Now wants to move to another house. He says he can't stand to look at it. I feel so bad for him. He worked so hard on building the deck and now all he can think about is that the hottub might have made Zach sick. Guest guest
Sara, I feel so bad for you and your hubby. Try not to beat yourself up too much. I felt the same way when I was reading the posts about toothbrush and toy cleaning. Do you know how many toys we had in the bath tub that had old water in them, like rubber ducks and boats? They probably had water in them contaminated with PA. MY son cultured PA this year, as you know. I probably caused it with the toys. What are we supposed to do? We are just humans, we are trying our best with this disease. I know exactly how you feel. It's so hard not to blame yourself. We can only learn from our mistakes and move on right? We are lucky that we have each other and this site to guide us. At least we have that. Cheryl Hot Tubs We asked the doctor at Zach's diagnosis if Zach could use our hot tub. Guest guest
Our doctor said hot tubs were a no no as well. You can't keep them in a bubble, but when they become adults, they're going to do whatever they want, and probably rebel some while teenagers. I feel as if I need to do as much as I can to keep my daughter as healthy as possible now, when I have some control. Obviously I can only control some of it, and what I know about. And some kids will be less affected than others, and I don't feel like I want to take the chance that my daughter is one of the ones that gets sick from a hot tub or whatever it may be. Here's an analogy that makes sense to me: My mother-in-law asked why we didn't give my son (w/out CF) Karo syrup when he was little. We said because the doctor said not to- it had been shown to contain bacteria on occasion. She said, " Well it's a surprise you kids survived... " (sarcastic tone). My view is this- just because some people got by with no effects BEFORE you knew it could hurt you doesn't mean you ignore the warnings NOW. Fifty years ago few people wore seatbelts either. Everyone didn't die in car accidents, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't wear seatbelts. Anyway- just my 2 cents. Guest guest
Hot tubs.hot topic! Well, my brother in law and his son, our nephew, sell them, including one to our illustrious Governor Rowland that has gotten him into hot water! :-) (He paid cash.someone else's). Hot tubs are a continuous repository of evil doing bacteria, and the more chemicals you pour in, the more skin sinus and lung irritations you're exposed to. Warm water vaporizers have the same effect. Once again, we face decisions as to what's best for our children and ourselves. My wife and I read the morning newspapers every day and watch the many varieties of birds at the feeders and the bird bath (when it isn't frozen). They seem to do very well. Maybe we should grow feathers? Hal
Guest guest
Sara, Don't do this to yourself. It is not your fault. Pseudomonas is EVERYWHERE, not just in hot tubs. My son is five years old and cultured PA for the first time ever about six months ago. This just amazes me when I consider the things he's gotten into. When he was a toddler, he ate kitty litter (yes, it had been used.) When he got a little older, he got into a bucket of plaster-of-paris and shook it all over the place. The whole room was filled with plaster dust (can you imagine that he had no ill effects from breathing that??? He didn't, his x-rays were clear afterward and he didn't even get sick from it.) When he was four, he attended a public preschool, and shared mucus with anyone within reach. Throughout his life he has handled all sorts of animals and even touched a cat's butt when he was three (reached right out - " don't DO THAT! " - and took a poke at it.) He's been in a pigpen, handled snakes that were unlucky enough to not see him approaching, kissed dogs right on the mouth, and gotten into numerous other situations that made me cringe to no end. He's eaten dirt and sand, more than once, and has handled things that reality t.v. shows wouldn't touch. And he didn't culture P.A. until six months ago. You just can't control some things, in fact, you just can't control most things. It's scary, I know. You just have to do what you can and let go of what you can't. ~ mommy of 3, 1 little monster with cf > But the webcast said that all hottubs > are a big no no. Guest guest
I didn't mean to start a " heated " debate. I was just venting mostly, but I appreciate everyone's comments. You guys are right there is so much I cannot control with this disease, but I feel like I need to make an effort to accept responsiblility for the things I can control. A no hot tub rule seems a small sacrifice to keep Zach healthy. Like Elias said, he might use them as an adult regardless of what I say. I am looking forward to moving to a different house anyway. and I have been fixing up our fixer upper for so long we are tired of it. Thanks for all of your " sermons " (JUST KIDDING!) Guest guest
Sara, Our daughter has never stepped one toe in a hot tub and she cultured PA for nearly five years. Zach could have gotten it anywhere. We can't blame ourselves for EVERYTHING. Tell your hubby to stop beating himself up about it. You were told it was OK to let him use it. You had no reason to believe that it would cause him a problem. Besides, you don't even know if that is how he got it. You did what your were supposed to do. It's Ok and Zach will be ok, even if he continues to culture PA. He could get rid of it.
