Guest guest
Acoya, Thanks for writng me back! I have just started to reshearch WLS as an option for my daughter. I have emailed Dr. R asking for a list of teenagers that have had the MGB however, he has not responded. I would have to pay for the surgery myself, it would be worth every penny if my daughter could lose weight. I can over come the financial part, the hurdle is going to be my husband. He is against surgery, he has been large all of his life and over the last year has lost about 75 lbs. with the " Weight Down Workshop " . So he thinks the only way is to exercise and eat less. He has been a very popular person all of his life, captian of the football team, class president etc.,. he has no concept of how being overweight effects a teenage girl. My daughter is in the 10th grade and it would probably be between her junior and senior year before we could have the surgery. I hope your dreams come true. I will keep in touch and follow your updates. Thanks again, Karla --- Acoya@... wrote: > Karla, > I got this message from you. Guest guest
PhillyJude, My name is Liz and my daughter is Autumn. We both had surgery together on 12/20/99. I have been on these boards for quite some time now. Every now and then I post when I feel someone needs some help with something. It is hard to keep up with all the messages working full time and taking care of four children. On to our story. My daughter was 16 at the time of our surgery. She is 5'5 and at the time of surgery she weighed 350. She came into this world weighing 10 pounds and it all went downhill from there. Before we knew it she was 350 pounds. We tried everything out there to help her lose the weight. Nothing seemed to help at all. We tried gyms, nutritionist, weight watchers, jenny craig you get my point. She had been tormented all her life from other people for being overweight but she hardly ever let it show that it bothered her. She always had a smile on her face. We had givin up hope of her ever losing the weight. We had tried everything. One day I saw Carnie on T.V. before she had the surgery and I was very excited about what I had heard about weight loss surgery. Funny thing is I was excited for myself because I have also always been overweight. I am 5'11 and at the time of surgery I weighed 280. I started to research for myself. Boy do I mean research. Ever free minute I had i was on the computer. I went around to different sites taking in everything I could about the different types of weight loss surgery. One day I ran across a site that had a 16 year old having had weight loss surgery so I decided maybe there was a chance for both of us to have it. Well that came to a halt real fast when I e-mailed tons of different doctors about doing surgery on a 16 year old. None of the doctors I contacted would consider doing surgery on a 16 year old. I didn't give up hope and kept searching knowing I wouldn't consider anything for her except a lap surgery. That right there made it very hard because there are only so many doctors that do lap. I finally came across Dr. R's site and started my research. I liked what I saw and contacted him about doing the surgery on her with her being 16. He said no problem. Now was the other big problem were we sure she was ready for something that was going to take a life time commitment on her part being just 16. After much debate and talking with her we finally agreed we had to take this chance. A chance for her to finally be able to live life to the fullest. We made her do the whole package on her own so she knew exactly what she was getting herself into. When she needed help I helped her as I was working on my own package. Insurance approval was no problem and then we were both headed for Durham to have surgery on the same day. My husband stayed home with the other kids. We checked into the hospital and they preped us and wheeled her off to surgery. She was so scared. I was in the holding area waiting for my surgery I was right after her. I would not let them give me anything to relax me until I saw her being wheeled out of surgery and I knew she was o.k. Then they wheeled me in for my surgery. We had rooms right next to each other and I was so proud of her she did so well. We were released from the hospital two days later and we flew home to Ct. She went back to school right after that and i went right back to work. The first few months were rough for her but she has adjusted fine. She is now down from 350 to 220. I have to nag her to make sure she takes her vitamins and calcium. I am down from 280 to 155. She still has a long way to go and she would like to have a revision if our insurance will cover it. But boy you ought to see her move now. She rides bikes, climbs mountains and nothing is holding her back. She has more energy now that she has ever had. Since our surgery my 72 year old mother has had the MGB and my brother in law has had it. As you can see it is a family affair with us. We are all very happy with the results and very happy with the MGB. If anyone ever needs us for a contact please feel free to e-mail us. Good luck to all of you preops out there and congrats to all you new post ops. Liz
Guest guest
Thanks for sharing your info! One question: Why does your daughter want a revision?? Peggy in Indy **** " If you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to be a horrible warning " .
Guest guest
Wow! Liz, Thanks so much for sharing. You guys are great. It is so good to hear of your progress and to hear of Autumn's. She is down 130 pounds, why would she want a revision? She is right on target. Another year and she'll be at goal, no? And you. How good does 155 feel?! At your height, you must be at goal already. So proud of you two! And then there's the rest of your family. . . I am too new to know what success I will have, but I will keep posting and let everyone know, as I move along. Take great care, you good mom! Fondly, PhillyJude
