Guest guest
Hi everyone, All this talk about healthy omega 3 diets makes me concerned as I have managed to get Shaelin from the 3rd to 50% for weight but now I am concerned that it has been with feeding him all the " wrong " foods. He eats lots of cheese, milk with carnation instant breakfast, chicken nuggets, hot dogs, lots of meat, etc. He does eat a fair amount of fruits and vegetables in addition to pasta and rice. The only high omega 3 food he eats is Salmon and even that has gotten a lot of bad press lately. He does not like any cakes, banana breads, muffins etc where I could include walnuts etc. Any suggestions for how to include more high omega 3 foods into a toddlers diet? Guest guest
Hi Jeanne, We do a couple things...We buy a brand of eggs called Vita eggs (Wilcox farm)that are high in Omega 3. I believe the diet they feed the chickens is high in flax. Anyway, they are not much more $$wise than the regular eggs. We also buy frozen waffles and oatmeal (2 things my daughter loves) that have flax in it and are high in Omega 3. We also just found a great fish oil, you can check out their website at www.coromega.com, my daughter actually loves the taste. It tastes like orange with no fishy taste or smell. She'll eat it right out of the packet but it says you can mix it in foods like yogurt, smoothies etc... I know you can also add flax meal to things but my daughter has a hard time with too much flax so we use it sparingly. Hope this helps. Guest guest
Pancakes made with walnuts, English walnuts, Black Walnuts and Pecans; you can also use Egg Beaters to add protein and cut out the fat; I am lucky, am able to get organic nuts in bulk where I live; most peanuts and peanut butter is a heavily sprayed crop-origin; organic really matters there! Best I could come up with there; I am big on veggies, and despite the amount of dairy I eat, my cholesterol is 176 with an excellent break-down and my blood pressure is about 118/60--a lot of this is due to heredity, enzymes be darbed! n, who has cf, has two carrier adult " kids, " and one wcf--all the same! All healthy-eating freaks; Alaskan Salmon is very good and one can buy eggs with Omega # fatty acids added in the yolk! Good luck! Guest guest
Hi Jeanne, Actually, the ingredients in Carnation Instant Breakfast are better than Scandishakes, so you can relax on that front. But you're right to watch the hot dogs (high in inflammatory fats and nitrates) and chicken nuggets (again, bad fats). Free-range meat such as buffalo is a better choice, or if you can find free-range (not corn fed) beef. These are animals that grazed on green pastures; they have a higher omega-3 ratio than feed-lot raised beef that was raised on corn or other grain-based meals. If Shaelin likes yogurt smoothies, you can sprinkle in some ground flax seed or flax seed oil. Canola oil is a good source of omega-3, and is considered by Dr. Simopolus to be one of the healthier oils (along with olive oil). You said he doesn't like cakes or muffins or fruit breads. But will he eat pancakes? If so, you can add flax seed and ground or chopped walnuts to pancake batter. Just be sure to make your own pancakes from scratch (only takes a minute!). Pancakes from mixes such as Bisquick, etc. contain " bad " fats. There are some places (one is in Wisconsin) that sell cheeses certified to have a high ALA content. You can call and they'll ship to you. Here is a web site where you can search for food suppliers that provide organic, free-range, healthy meats, poultry and dairy products. http://www.eatwild.com/suppliers.html We really underestimate the damage to our bodies caused by pesticides, insecticides, hormones, antibiotics and artificial sweetners such as NutraSweet (aspartame). Guest guest
Kim, when I was in high school in an elocution class, we were doing improm ptu speeches, and one kid drew the topic " home-baking. " He immediately thought of pancakes and said, earning him ever-lasting fame, " First you open up a box of scratch; you want to make them from scratch, no mixes! " I make my own mix and I THINK I have the right nuts in there! Thank you for all that you advise us on; the ingredients in a box of brand-name biscuit mix is enough to send your arteries into convulsions as you read the stuff! Thank you, n Re: Omega 3 suggestions for toddlers Hi Jeanne, Actually, the ingredients in Carnation Instant Breakfast are better than Scandishakes, so you can relax on that front. Guest guest
Not necessarily for little ones but, in adddition to walnuts, brazil nuts are one of the nuts highest in Omega 3s. I have been able to buy them, shelled and in bulk. M
Guest guest
Kim, Do you have a recipe for pancakes from scratch with flax meal added??? I have tried adding it several times to our pancakes and it makes them... yucky. Gummy. Maybe I'm adding too much??? Also, I remember reading somewhere that flax must be ground before consuming to get the omega benefits. Is this true or did I dream it? It seems to make mixes gummy when added after being ground into meal. The one thing that I've added ground flax to that turns out really well and doesn't alter the taste of is meatloaf and meatballs. I use ground turkey instead of beef or pork, though, so maybe my family isn't aware of what these foods are " supposed " to taste like anyway. Thanks, ~ But will > he eat pancakes? Guest guest
I had a really bad day at the clinic today. My daughter is 12 and has a feeding tube. She only eats a little by mouth but drinks three 8 ounce medical drinks a day. The doctor said her weight is good but she said she just doesn't feel hungry. She will eat a little because she has to. She has had feeding therapy but she is not that interested in food. She is a happy child though. The doctor was rude and got my daughter all upset. He practically threatened us if she doesn't eat more. I am so sad and upset. Thank-you for any help. Love, mother of Athena 12 wcf

Guest guest
often when people are not hungry it is a good idea to use bitter herbs to stimulate digestion and use Liver herbs to help with the functioning of that. Guest guest
, I'm sorry to hear that her doc upset her. That is so unnecessary. My daughter also has a feeding tube and refuses ANYTHING by mouth, we are also in feeding therapy. So far it has been positive, but Piper is only 19 months old. Is there another doctor that she could see? My daughter was recently put on Periactin, it is a antihistamine, but it stimulates appetite. I have began to notice that Piper is starting to get hungry now. Maybe it would work for your daughter. I hope that things get better for both of you. Guest guest
, I am sorry to hear that things went badly at clinic. I was really hoping that it would go well for you both. Did you see your regular doc, or were you able to see someone else? I was thinking that maybe getting her upset might have been a device he was using to get her to do what he wants her to do??? (like what he said last time?) I know, it's not a very effective way of getting her to eat but am wondering if that is what he was doing. Well, I am keeping you both in my you-know-whats. Guest guest
Dear Katy, Thank-your for your e-mail. Maybe I could try the periactin with Athena. I have also heard of something called epulor that is suppossed to be good and alot of calories. But it didn't say that it stimulates the appetite. I was wondering if I could get some posts involving eating issues from some others. I hope Piper is doing well.
