Guest guest
, Yes, you can stay on stage one foods as long as you need to. The " stages " chart is not something that's carved in stone... just a general guideline. Your body will be a more reliable guide. Some people can tolerate some stage two foods, but may NOT tolerate some of the stage one foods. Carrots are one example. It's not uncommon for people to report not being able to digest carrots very well.... and often, butternut squash is a good substitute for them. Generally, butternut squash, in MY opinion, is well-tolerated and maybe *should* have been included in stage one. Do remember that the stages chart was not written by Elaine Gottschall.... was not included in her books, and in fact, she really didn't like it very much, to be honest. She felt it was too restrictive and would make people feel like they had to progress through the foods in a particular way.... when, in fact, it's very individual. Lots of trial and error. So, just look at that chart as a tool that you may or may not find useful. I think you might have been experiencing some die-off..... when you thought it was the spinich. Die-off symptoms can make you feel really lousy.... and very common in the first few weeks. Welcome to the list.... we look forward to hearing about your progress! Patti, list moderator new to group with some questions Hello. My name is and I'm new to the group. I've been reading through the archives the last couple of weeks and am impressed by how many helpful people are here. I'll try my best to keep my intro short. A few years ago I caught pneumonia and was given multiple rounds of antibiotics for treatment. I really haven't felt well since. My main symptoms include: fatigue, achiness, mental " fog " , and anxiety. These symptoms began during my antiobiotic treatment. Over the last few years, I've been to quite a few different naturopathic doctors and have had various testing done. The CDSAs I have had done revealed that I had a great deal of non- beneficial bacteria including: Streptococcus, Citrobacter, Klebsiella, Staphylococcus, and a deficiency of beneficial bacteria. I also tested positive for leaky gut syndrome. I was recommended to go a special leaky gut diet and to start taking a few different supplements including acidophilus. When I was retested, my intestinal permeability was somewhat better, but the CDSA still showed an abundance of non-beneficial bacteria. I few months ago, I started researching more indepth about how to correct dysbiosis. I was just about to start trying various anti-fungals, when I happened to stumble across some information on the SCD. The theory behind it made a lot of sense to me and also explained why I wasn't improving when I've been recommended to eat complex carbohydrates for the diet that's suppose to help with leaky gut syndrome. So I decided to start the SCD for my New Year's resolution. I started the diet according to this page: http://www.pecanbread.com/foodprep.html. I'm at the end of my third week. The biggest problem that I've been having so far, is trying to pinpoint which foods I can tolerate. For years, the way I feel varies so much from day to day, I can't really ever be sure if it's because of something I'm introducing, or if I'm just having a bad day. When I introduced spinach, I really thought I was feeling worse at first, but then I stopped, and I still wasn't feeling well. I've been sticking to only stage one foods at this point. I just have a few questions: Because of my difficulties in pinpointing possible problem foods, is it okay to just stay on stage one foods for a while and wait for improvements until moving further on? Since the stage one foods are generally the safest, do I need to worry about my ability to tolerate them? Thanks,

My experience was almost exactly like yours. I was also given Prednisone for nasal polyps. I only went to one naturopath. I told her about SCD, she said it was a good diet but hard to do. I have not found it so. I also have Chemical Sensitivities and Latex Allergy and gotit all after the anti biotic. As you begin to heal food tolerance will likely increase. There will still be some SCD legal foods that you may choose to avoid. In the beginning as bad gut bugs die off you may not feel well as you are detoxing. Hang in, it gets better! Carol F. Guest guest
Welcome to the group. My first question would be did you do the intro diet? Secondly, are you still taking a probiotic, and which one? It is imparative that your acidolpholus is SCd compliant. Meleah new to group with some questions Hello. Guest guest
Meleah - Thanks for the welcome. I did do the intro diet for 5 days. I alternated between beef and beef broth, chicken and chicken broth, turkey and turkey broth. Then, like I said, I tried my best to see which of the stage one foods I could tolerate. Still not too sure, though. I stopped all of my supplements including acidophilus before starting SCD. Once I start acidophilus and other supplements again, I'll be sure to check that they're compliant. Incidentally, the one prescription that I'm taking and can't stop is hydrocortisone for adrenal insufficency. This contains lactose monohydrate for its filler. I take one tablet a day and each one weighs about 200mg. I searched to archives and couldn't find out if this filler is SCD legal or not, but couldn't find anything. I'd really appreciate any thoughts on this. Thanks, > > Welcome to the group. My first question would be did you do the intro diet? Secondly, are you still taking a probiotic, and which one? Guest guest
<<prescription that I'm taking and can't stop is hydrocortisone for adrenal insufficency. This contains lactose monohydrate for its filler. >> The filler isillegal. Lactose monohydrate is just plain " milk sugar " . You might check into having the medication compounded for you, without the filler. Might be expensive but worth it if you can possibly do it. Some meds can't be compounded, I suppose.... but I have a feeling this one could be. Just look in the phone book for compounding pharmacies in your area.... or ask your regular pharmacy to recommend one. A couple of phone calls could at least give you some information to go on. Guest guest
Patti, Thanks for the info and advice. Before starting the diet, I tried finding out whether it was legal or not, but couldn't find anything on it. Now that I know, I'll try to get the hydrocortisone compounded with a legal filler. Is there a specific type of filler I should request? Since the hydrocortisone comes in mg doses, the capsules or tablets have to made up of mostly something else. > > <<prescription that I'm taking and can't stop is hydrocortisone for > adrenal insufficency. Guest guest
, The following supplement additives/fillers are all legal: Cellulose (also Methyl Cellulose, Microcrystalline Cellulose, Plant Cellulose, Vegetable Cellulose) Citric Acid Ethanol Glycerin l-leucine Magnesium Stearate Potassium Sorbate Silica Silicon Dioxide Sodium Benzoate To be honest, I don't know which of these are used as fillers, and which are added for some other reason, but the compounding pharmacy should be able to pick something off this list to use.
